image.jpg image.jpg Just sharing again. Found 2 rod bearings (1) and (3) cylinder that were shattered. Noticed the crank had crack in it so took it out.

Brought in for bull gear damage. Put in bull gear, crank gear, and air compressor gear. Customer asked to inspect main and rod bearings. Pulled a couple main bearing caps and found wear. Put in all mains, put in two rods and on the third one found busted up rod bearing. Got to looking and noticed crack. I would imagine the miles is around 1.8 million.

He had it towed in. So we did not hear it run before we started working on it. Just went by what he said was going on. I pulled the pan plug in the yard and got bull gear teeth out.

I've seen that before at the front when a gear fails and chunk gets between the bull and crank gears. I seen one shear the nose right off. Went for a road call once because the fan wouldn't come on and it was running hot. Found the damper and fan belts not moving at all. The gears and accessory driver were turning, so it ran, had a water pump, alternator and A/C, just no fan.

When I tore it apart, the bull and crank gears were missing chunks and the crank was broken right in front of the crank gear.

So my guess would be that a chunk of gear got between and shocked the crank so hard that it cracked.

Probably right Grape. I think it was #4 and #1 rod bearing that was busted up (not 3). So it probably got "shocked" then.
