What will cause 2005 freightliner with detroit 14L 60 series egr motor to sputter under a load and throw out black smoke when going thru gears on high side? I have changed the EGR valve and mechanic says VPOD and turbo is good according to diagnostic but actuator valve is out of specs according to detroit specifications. Has any experienced this problem or knows what the problem may be?

My 2007 Century did that and it was the EGR valve getting stuck. I had it replaced and all the coughing, black smoke, and loss of power went away.

Since we are talking about series 60 engines I have a check engine light that goes on a couple of times a day. It goes on when my temp gauge starts jumping around for no reason and sometimes this triggers the cooling fan to come on even when my engine is running cool. The mechanic at the TA told me that I probably have some dirt inside my temp sensor or a frayed wire.

Where is the temp sensor? Someone told me its behind the starter but I'm not sure what it looks like. Also how do I clean it?

I changed EGR valve last week and it's still doing it. Hearing now it could be VPOD or turbo.

Temp sensor, on my 05 14 ltr is on the right side kinda up from the vpod on an angle to the right, behind the oil cooler, in a hard place to reach, the plastic on it gets realy dry with the heat, when I tried to take it out a couple years ago, it broke on me.

Hey not sure you got your answer yet,but here it goes. Sounds like an injector getting compression past it.This happened with me around 1350 1500 rpms.It would shutter and miss, and blow black smoke.Only way to find out for sure is put a fuel pressure gauge on the return fuel line back to tank. You won't have much pressure on the return fuel line, maybe 10 to 15 ibs at most. When it starts chucking look at gauge and see if its spiking with pressure,if it is then you are getting compression past injector. For me I changed delta circuit senor and vpod. At this time its running good. But food for thought these 60 series 14L are touchy with this type of problem. Solution?? Don't use Lucas oil additives. these engines have a reason for cumming up soot with that oil additive. Also when you changed the sensor make sure there is no soot clogging the line. This sometimes is over looked. Hope my chicken scratch helped.
