Hubby did not pass his DOT physical because the physician at Consentra said he had Peripheral Neuropathy because he stated sometimes he feels numbness on the balls of his feet. The physician stated he needed to see a Neurologist or a Physiatrist. He went to the Neurologist, which we had no help on where to find one, and the Neurologist gave him an exam and stated he was fit for Commercial Driving. He had an EMG done. A nerve conductivity test and his Neurologist still says he is fit for commercial driving. He also went to see a Physiatrist and she stated that he was fine to drive a commercial vehicle. Nonetheless this physician at Concentra will still not pass him. What credentials does she have to override what two physicians with this specialty have?
As stated in the FMCSA Medical Examiner Handbook
Peripheral Neuropathies This group of disorders consists of hereditary and acquired conditions where the nerves, including the axon and myelin or the myelin selectively outside the spinal cord, are affected. These conditions may affect the sensory or motor nerves individually, or both may be affected. Peripheral neuropathy may be a complication of diabetes mellitus. You should evaluate the sensory modalities of pain, light touch, position, and vibratory sensation in the toes, feet, fingers, and hands for signs of peripheral neuropathy.
The medical examiner at Concentra didn’t even touch him or evaluate him.
Recommend not to certify if: The driver has a diagnosis of a peripheral neuropathy. NOTE: Neuromuscular disorders represent a complex group of conditions. The severity can vary with the individual and in certain instances may be treatable or nonprogressive. Guidelines for reconsideration of the decision not to certify include: • Evaluation by a neurologist or physiatrist who understands the functions and demands of commercial driving. Specialist may recommend a simulated driving skills test or equivalent functional test. • Annual recertification that repeats specialist evaluation and driving test when indicated.
If the severity can vary with the individual and obviously it does, and he has done everything asked of him from this physician at Concetra, why can’t he get his DOT physical card? This is terribly frustrating and I even sent a letter to the FMCSA Medical Review Board. Hope to hear something soon. Just had to rant.
Thank you.

Hi fleiscka, I agree with Mark ^, go somewhere else, if you can. Sometimes the employer dictates which place you go. But sounds like you've done your homework. The doctors at these clinics, I've found, are less than credible. If you ask me, these are the quacks that can't do a regular doctors job, so they stick them in these "occupational clinics". Sorry, no love for those places. Who knows, they could get paid "by the visit", so failing him insures another visit.
Today, I had my BP taken, and it was 144/88, with meds. I said, well, I guess I can drive a truck with that. The doctor said, they LOWERED the numbers to 140/80 (I think) I said, you know, in an industry that's already strapped for drivers, they are making it MORE difficult to get drivers. I was flabbergasted. Sometimes, family doctors can give DOT exams, if they take some stupid test ( my dr. told me) so try that. Good luck.Poacher Thanks this. -
I agree, my family Dr. is on the list which I like since she knows my medical history.

Concentra is at the bottom of the heap , find another doctor.
Company where i worked years ago would have nothing to do with
them .Drac1985 Thanks this. -
According to OOIDA drivers who fail a physical for any reason have the legal right to get a second opinion. And if that second opinion differs from the first, then the FMCSA has to review the findings and make a determination on which to accept. But I never found out how you get them to review anything. So, if Concentra hasn't submitted their information to the FMCSA, get a physical elsewhere because it sounds like you have overwhelming evidence that he is healthy enough to be given a medical card.

You should not volunteer information to a bottom feeder urgent care clinic. Now that your here. Go get a medical card somewhere else.
