Lost Trail isn't that bad. Used to run it all the time at 105000. It's actually good running in the winter. They leave the snowpack on the road and it's cold enough you have good traction. Only ever had to chain if it was in the upper 20's or warmer or I was empty.

I did Lost Trail last Thursday at 86,000. Just put the cruise on 25 and creep up. It's nice, now, unlike the goat trail it was before the reconstruction about twelve years ago.

I also like the MT287 bypass through Island Park, although that's less fun during snow and camper season.

If you were there around 930pm we probably passed...

The road is totally truckable -- no taking up two lanes or anything, but I'm pretty sure I burned as much diesel and spent more time than if I'd just stayed on 15 to 90 (from Blackfoot to Missoula)...

I left Challis for Calgary about five, so I was a couple of hours ahead of you.

Yes, you burnt more diesel. But what country!

    csmith1281 Thanks this.

Well time to pull this thread back up toward the top........

Looking at replacing drive tires. I think @RedForeman opted for 16 ply/H load rated. Does anybody here have input/data for H v.s. G loaded rated tires?

I got load range H steers when it came to replace my last set. No real noticeable different from a G yet.

I only did that on the steers. My steer axle runs heavy, 150 x 2 tanks doesn't help that. The goal was to have adequate numbers on the sidewall in case I ever got questioned about being a few hundred over 12k, as well as having a more durable casing. I don't expect them to wear any different than the last set of load range G Goodyear G399 that went 160k and could have come close to 200k if I had rotated them.

Edited to add: I have the Goodyear G305 fuel efficient drives. Those got me close to a 1/2 mpg improvement over the Bandag Megatrek caps that the truck came with. Only complaint is they are rock magnets. Otherwise they seem to be wearing ok, just a little heel/toe wear on the lugs from using the jakes a lot. I like the look of the new G505. They ought to be better to prevent stone retention.

Red, I ran those 305's and they are great tires. Not only do they have a nice low roll resistance, but they last forever. You should see at least 350k miles out of them.
