I am helping out a friend by going to pick up one of his new semi tractors from a dealership on the opposite side of the country. What documentation do I need to have with me & posted on the truck for the scales? I'm thinking I need his DOT#/ company name on the side, bill of sale, insurance coverage documents, temp tag, anything i'm missing?

will I need to put "not for hire" or something so I am not asked where my IFTA, & MC numbers are?

    Thanks!

No you pretty much covered it. Put that "not for hire" sign on door should do the job. I never had any problems when I bought trucks from other parts of the country.

Last new truck I bought I just carried the purchase paperwork and dealer gave me a 7-day temp plate to use.

Most dealers will give you 7 days temp but you need insurance before leaving the lot

Make sure you check the oil. Im serious on this. I picked one off the lot for my company, they only put enough in to have ot go a few miles.

What? How do you only put enough oil to drive a few miles? I have a 2010 Volvo and if I lose 1 gallon of oil it gives a code. If it loses 2 gallons it shuts down.I am assuming that other manufacturers have these same type of safety parameters.

    You must mean diesel.

No, I mean oil. I checked the oil on the stick, was showing fine. Drove a few miles to ts to get fuel. Fuel up go to leave. Get check engine light. Get out, check oil and it was bone dry.

You should always check the oil, but did you find out why it went through at least one gallon so quickly?
