    That’s a bad one.

When loading any truck with a fork lift no driver should ever be in the truck until its been loaded.

I once saw a fork lift while working at a Sheetrock Plant run off of a dock backwards. As the fork lift ran off the dock it was falling to its left hand side and the driver quickly jumped off the right hand side landed on his feet without getting a single scratch. I was amazed how he jumped off.

This is why I check to see if my trailer door is shut and if the dock security door is shut. Relying on red/greens isn't safe anymore because the warehouse employees themselves do not take it. Upon themselves to adhere to protocol/warehouse safety measures.

This is the best possible argument for dock locks. Or for those outfits that put a lockout on trailer air lines.
Hell of a way for a 19 year old kid to have to die. And that trucker will live with this for the rest of his life.

There is a lot of questions that fall into place here.

Was the kid certified? Was he wearing his seatbelt? Was there a light at the dock? Was it red? Was it green?

    But then again

If I remember reading the story correctly It states that the forklift was getting out of the truck... So how did the driver not feel the forklift rolling in there? What in the world made him pull out without talking to the dock workers first? Or anyone telling him he's loaded. Man. Tough one for both parties

That's true, he should have felt that the fork lift was inside the bed of the truck.

A LTL dock lock would keep the trailer from moving. An air lock on the glad hand keeps the driver from releasing the brakes on the trailers wheels. Cheap insurance, family may want to sue the owner of the wharehouse that didnt want to have safety measures in place.

Wat bugs me in this story is this:
Why didn't the safetycage stop the young man from hitting his head?

    Sad story
