I'm getting ready to turn my application in at Landstar and I'm wondering if I can make a living along the gulf coast without staying out 3-4 weeks at a time? Does Landstar have oilfield loads out of houston that pay decent? I will be using a step deck trailer if that matters. Any help is appreciated! Thanks

When the rigs move you can make money. Houston is pretty much a cut throat area sometimes you hit it just right and other times you sit. As far as staying in the southern lanes with a stepdeck money isn't to bad, I know a few people who stay below 40 and run no further west than 35.

many people "make a living" doing those sorts of loads ..... but that means different things to people

Thanks for the help! How are things with a 2 axle double drop in the same areas? Are there 5-600 mile short loads that come out of the houston area? I'm happy with where I'm leased to now except for the money. I'm home most nights and off weekends but when I factor in deadhead miles I'm only averaging 2.20 a mile gross or 1.65 to the truck. Can I expect better rates then that and have the option to make more money when I want to take a longer load?

I was approved and ready to make the move but I never pulled the trigger. I decided to stick it out with my current company for another year but I'm just tired of getting pushed around by dispatchers. How are the loads for flat/step along the gulf coast now?
I have small kids and like working short haul or out and back type loads. Can I make decent money doing these types of loads and running Tx, La, Ok and a few more of the states along the coast?
Some people I've talked to say they get most of their freight from the load board but when I read on here most say there is nothing but left overs on the load board.
Anybody live near in Texas and run these areas? Any help is appreciated. Thanks
