So as my mind was wandering as it tends to do from time to time and I passed by a wrecker hooking up to a big rig and I got to thinking.....what did you guys and gals who have been out here longer than I've been alive (I'm 41) handle breakdowns back before the fancy boxes were in the trucks and devices where you can talk to people with a push of a button on the other side of the world like the Jetsons? I'm thinking of examples where the motor quits on you at 2am on some goat path in the middle of the dessert and there ain't no phones or cars around for miles.
Anybody have any stories where they thought "oh ####.....I'm really ####ed here!!"
I know most of you had to know your way around a motor and for that my hats off to ya for doing it for so long.
Hey you experienced drivers....I mean you REALLY experienced drivers

my story:
happened in 2008. in the middle of nowhere on us-190 between Eldorado, tx and iraan, tx. busted turbo, no cell phone. local shop who could fix my truck 75 m away.no local tow truck. waited until sunrise. disconnected turbo's oil supply line and the big hose on air intake. I was lucky I had air hose for tires. I cut that hose and one end connected to oil supply line and the other end to oil fill neck. I had 12k in the trailer and some how within hours I got to Fort Stockton, tx.Last edited: Aug 29, 2015

Back in 1988 I was broke down on ice covered hill over a hundred miles east of Tonopah Nevada on highway 6. The old freightliner gave out pulling the hill. I gave the phone number to a lady that happened by that night and she went home and made the call for me. It was several hours before help arrived but at least somebody was willing to lend a hand.
