I am in the approval process with Landstar and am wanting to go flatbed. I am a little worried about year round freight. Can anyone give me an idea of what to expect? Live in middle Tennessee and can run either skateboard or step.
    Thanks

Not with landstar but know enough about them i can take a stab at this. Open deck freight always slows down in winter, but even when it's slow it is still better than 98% of van freight.

Say you work 25 days a month in peak season, in winter slow down season you may only work 22. And rates will drop about 10 percent.

    z32sean and Puppage Thank this.

i'm currently pulling step-deck with them out of Orlando fl..freight is not tht great right now.the agents do alot of double brokering which kills the the rate & landstar does nothing abt it(Quickest way to tell is when you call and they say hold on let me check to see if it's still available ..and of course you will be on elog which is why i am leaving soon!!!!

Florida is a black hole for open deck freight. And even so, landstar has some pretty good freight down here. Just like every company, they got good agents out hustling new contracts every day, and they got not so good agents perfectly content to just get brokered loads covered.

How long did the application process take you? My current company driver job took two days and I was in for drug test, two days later I was in a truck. Years ago it took close to a month to get going with FedEx. I only started the process a week ago but I'm ready already!

it took me almost month.you have to keep calling them and stay up on your application.and you may have to wait up to week before you can get your trailer especially step-deck trailer.but you seem like in good freight area you should be ok.

E-log is why you're leaving? Everyone is going to have to run them soon enough. What are you going to do leave the next place as well?

I hope you're right... but if you're not your 1995 truck might be worthless in the next 10 years, maybe less. Good luck. Not to mention Double Yellow stated it best... what happens at a small company when you get a log violation? The log department edits your logs so your compliant. This will be the same for independents if they need extra hours. I hope your 1995 KW runs you a long time without any issues.. but ops with late models will work the system without any trouble.
