Meritor 12 speed auto

It is a 9400i ISX 400

So, what is the life span of these transmissions? How much is a replacement unit?

Personally, I would stay with a Manual Transmission, preferably a 13 speed.

You're just looking for trouble with a used Automatic truck.

I drove a 9900 IX with a C15 cat and the same 12speed for years I loved it it was like driving a Buick. I quit shortly after they took it away and replaced it with a freightliner and a 10 speed I had been with them for 7 years

The transmission clutches itself with an air operated slave cylinder. It's a two pedal fully automatic operation.

I sometimes had to stop and restart the truck to get the Meritor to reset itself after it would lose its mind every so often when using it manually.

Mine does the same and last night it would not go into gear unless I shut it off and start it back up
