Before my time but my Grandpa used to run 'em back in the day. Back in the 50's he ran through Minnesota a lot and said they used to get ice from the local farmers that would cut it in the winter time and then store the ice in sawdust during the warmer months.

It was great being able to "disappear" when you wanted.

Log books have been around since the 1930s, when the ICC first came up with HOS regs. They were not closely enforced, for many decades, but they were around.

tachograph is "old school" truck speed/rpm monitor that used a card to track how you drove and the time you did it in.

You could use a truck with a tachograph and not have to use a logbook.

Factory built sleepers weren't developed by truck manufacturers until the early 1960's. Until then there were all manner of "homemade" setups.

Yup... The Kdeck was just a computerised verson of a tacograph that you punch certain codes into when you start/stop. It would also give an overspeed and over rpm alarm depending where the company set the limits. KCTL had them in some of their newer equiptment when I drove for 'em, and you would get booked if you had too many spikes on the print out. Same for violations on the tack chart. We still had to run log books too.
