I've been pre-hired at Tyson and will probably be there on March 29th for Orientation.....so was wondering if anyone knew anything about their Orientation.

My instructor told me that they have a pretty tough backing test and so I'm just looking for more information about what all I can expect.

    Thanks.

Did Tyson come to your cdl school, or how was the contact made? What is their starting pay?

    Thanks....

Tyson is one of the companies that hires students from my school (Crowder, in Neosho, Mo). I called them about a month ago, talked to a recruiter. She faxed the application, I filled it out, and faxed it back. Then things went on hold while they tried to line up trainers and one had a problem where he had to stop for awhile. Now things are straightened out and as soon as I graduate (next week) she'll get me into Orientation.

Starting pay is $400 a week and you are with a trainer for 8 weeks. Then you get your own truck. That's about all I know right now.

A recruiter is coming to school today, 3-15, so I will get the chance to talk to him in person (have talked with him on the phone a few weeks ago). I'll come back in tonight and let you know what I found out.

Thanks for the link, Kickin, but the page says there's nothing there.

The guy that came up yesterday is not a recruiter, he is the Safety Manager (or something like that) and he used to drive for Tyson. Tyson feels that a driver would be better able to represent the company than just a recruiter. Anyhoo, this is what we learned.

Orientation is 5 days, they put you up in a hotel, and lunch is catered in from the steak house. You have a physical, learn all about the company, and the road test is the same one that we do at school to get our CDL license. They pay $400 for the Orientation, plus the cost of a bus ticket for those of us driving in. (Which in my case wouldn't be much since it's only about 90 miles from me)

They just hired 5-6 new trainers. The trainers spend 2 days at Tyson, then come up to our school in Neosho for 1 day. (I know my instructor was down there last week so that was probably what he was doing). I will get put with a female trainer, and possibly one that smokes, YIPPEE. We will be out for 8 weeks, but only 2 weeks at a time and then home for 2 days. If we are coming close to home on our way in, I can get dropped off at the house. After the 8 weeks, we get our own trucks.

All the trucks are 2007 or later automatics with a 53' reefer or a dry van. Then you are out 8-10 days at a time with 1 day off for every 7 out. They travel to all 48 states and your starting pay is .38 a mile. Dispatched and Practical miles. 87% of the loads are drop and hook. If for some reason you get layed-over for at least 24 hours, they put you in a hotel and pay you $85. They also pay all Unloading Fees. After 1 year your pay goes to .39 and after 3 it goes to .40.

Holiday pay is $115, you can choose to have Thanksgiving or Christmas off, but if you choose to work Christmas you get an extra $250 incentive pay. After 1 year you get your birthday and 1 extra holiday.

The insurance looks pretty good. For Basic coverage, for my son and I, it's $20.35 a week, for Premium it's $40.70. After 6 months you get dental and vision for free.

Vacation is 1 year-5 days, 3 years-10 days, 10 years-15 days. The days are Mon-Fri so if you come in on a Friday night, you end up with 7 days off. Pay is calculated based on your last 13 paychecks.

Tuition reimbursement is $2,000 (paid at $150 per month) and he's trying to get it up to $2,700.

Rider program is 13yo and up, any family member, and the cost is $16.50 per month.

They have a 401K program with matching funds starting out at 1 or 2% and after a year they go up to 5%. When you leave the company you get to take all of your 401K with you.
