Power steering noise.

Hi Snail, I've never seen a filter on the PS. Maybe the newer trucks. Sounds like the steering box is worn. Adjusting the free play never worked for me. ( just bound up the box)

 

If poss. if you can change p/s filter jack up both ft. wheels and turn steering wheel slowly all the way back and forth listening to steering box for changes in sounds from pump, the valves inside steering box can wear and make sounds like you are hearing?

 

It's inside the reservoir, had them on my Frtlnr's and these Volvo's.

 

Don't know exactly what you're feeling but on my old freightliner the filter blew apart inside the reservoir. The pieces went thru the lines and messed up the pump, the steering felt like you were driving on ice, really "easy" I guess you could say, no resistance. That's when I discovered that there was a filter you had to change, a learning experience even after all these years.

 

Yeah and makes kinda like a humming sound when you turn, like an old Ford steering pump.

 

The is a bolt at Pitman (?) arm when it connects to output shafts . They will get loose, and make truck wander .

 

Any resolution on this? My steering is humming and the #### truck is all over the place. Alignment good. New king pins new tierods. New bearings. New PS filter. Steering groans at slow speed and truck wanders and is slopping.
