The place I got the 7 foot Firestick from won't restock, and says it's because of the weight and height being too much.

He prefers Browning but those are out of stock for now, and sells Francis 5.5 or 5 Foot Firestick II without qualms. Was not impressed with Tunable Tip Francis.

Waste of money. It ain't the antenna, it's the location.

Yup. The one they sold me, I'm selling. Worthless to me. Trying to find someone caught up on bigger is better in one of these truck stops to sell it to.

I 40 ex77 to ex72, westbound.. He was ahead, up and over a hill. He said he could hear me pretty good, but I was starting to get a lot of noise in my receive. So 5 miles with terrain interference.

Even if most of the antenna is below the roof line. The packaging days get 2/3 of the antenna above the roof. What good is 7ft if 5ft of it is below the roof and angled at bridges?

So, maybe 2ft of a 7fter above the roof at an angle, and the angle of killing some of the height vs a 5ft antenna pointed straight up with 4ft of it above the roof.

BTW, I switched back to my original whip that Bob's CB replaced on my Browning, which is 6 inches shorter. Now it won't strike bridges, but the swr is now close to flat across the channels, and removed the elbow he put on the back of the radio antenna. I'm never letting John touch my truck again. Also remounted the radio where I had it, where it's secure and cool and not getting scratched up like when John shoved it into a too small hole!

I'll try to get a 5ft 5/8 wave top load antenna today to test against my 5.5' BR-78. See what getting the load way up there will do?

Oh I agree your antenna is in a better spot, and probably does perform better or as good than the 7ft mounted low on the mirror. And if you are using a steel whip, you will probably be just fine. It may bend now again and I have seen them snap in two, but it should be pretty durable. Our trucks have a mirror there so I didn't fool with that option though it crossed my mind. In fact I did find a use for it. And you can notice one of the antennas I tried in my quest for something half way decent.
