I would be leery of signing a contract that obliges you into something for nothing in return.

When you sign a contract for the Canadian Forces for ROTP or to attend RMC, they pay your tuition and living expenses and you get a degree. When you graduate, you get a job in your field and you're obliged to 5 years (typically) of service in rank or you owe them some money for your degree.

Unless a trucking company paid your tuition at school, why would you agree to contract to their sole benefit? They can't fire you without cause anyway, so it's not like you have the benefit of a 1 year guaranteed work experience. The Labour Standard already guarantees that, and if you screw up I'm sure their contract does t prevent them from firing you anyway.

It's questionable whether the contract would legally enforceable anyway, but why on earth would anyone sign such a thing?

I am just speculating here. I wonder if the one year contract or how ever long it happens to be is to cover the company's investment in terms of training. Yep will graduate from TCCC and will receive my AZ but I would imagine the difference between school knowledge and real world knowledge in terms of driving and what you need to know to actually do the job probably varies a great deal.

That being said I am hoping to find a company who takes on new drivers without having to sign a contract

Thanks for all of the input

I genuinely laughed out loud when I read that. A friend and I were just discussing that today.
