Anyways, my friend got his new r730, not quiete 11mpg yet but 10.3 @ 97000kgs, but it's early days yet it's not even run in yet that's just it's first trip, only problem with me is: it makes my 580 look like 220 lol, I'm serious! The thing slows down for nothing! My 580 is no slouch but the 730 really is in a different league, even my mates 620 was just left for dead on the mountains heading north from Milan to mount blanc, I got a very short drive of it and really is hard to tell if you got a load on behind

I just saw images and data of Scania r730cb8x8ehz specially build for norway army

it is equipped with 730hp engine 8x8 wheel formula( usually scania v8 cant be equipped with front wheel drive, currently trucks can be with front wheel drive only up to 440hp for most Eu markets ( some 480)

truck is also equipped with very rare R crew cab which is specially built

all images and data are from Scania and Copyright go to them

Spacious all-wheel-drive heavy-haulage tractor – tailored solutions are standard from Scania
Scania strives to find the best possible solution for each customer application, including services to support any deal. Living proof of this devotion are the innovative solutions on the Scania R 730 8x8 heavy-haulage tractor exhibited at Transport 2011 in Lillestrøm, Norway, tailored to provide high safety and mobility in specialised peace-keeping missions.

Powered by the 730 hp Scania V8, the vehicle has been purpose-built for heavy-haulage peace-keeping duties. It is an 8x8 tractor equipped with a high-mounted Scania CrewCab with space for two drivers and seating or resting facilities for an additional 4-6 persons. Comfort and convenience have had high priority since the crew needs to be able to arrive rested to a new destination. The fitting of ballistic protection has been foreseen in the design.
The choice of engine output and overall vehicle performance are guided by the potential need to quickly withdraw from a hazardous area without the heavy-haulage vehicles slowing down other units.
The vehicle features fully automated Scania Opticruise automated gearchanging with overdrive, 12 road-going ratios and twin crawler gears. The four axles are all equipped with hub reduction. The gross vehicle weight is 32 tonnes and the maximum gross train weight 120 tonnes.
The components come out of the Scania modular truck toolbox, which greatly facilitates access to parts and service. Being shared with other Scania vehicles in the fleet or on the market, these parts and components are already familiar to Scania service technicians. The vehicle is thus designed for easy servicing via the normal Scania network.
Also on display at Transport 2011 in Lillestrøm just north of the Norwegian capital Oslo are 12 other Scania trucks customised for a wide range of transport applications, including vehicles for long-haulage, hook-lifts, tippers, timber transport, animal transport, distribution, road sweeping/clearing and a fire engine. Most of the vehicles are fitted with Scania V8 engines because of the exceptionally demanding topography in Norway. V8 trucks account for around 60 percent of Scania’s sales in Norway.

Don't understand why they use Opticruise in military vehicles that need extreme reliability. Why not Allison like real heavyhaulers use?

I'd prefere conventional design for military truck. Mine blowing under steer wheel easily kills all the crew. Why GAZ-66 was discontinued after soviet intervention to Afganistan? Russian troopers did not want to drive COE trucks and they wanted to get conventional trucks.

about opticruse... one shot to air tank and truck is immobilized.

And what is the military truck without TMPS (tire pressure managment system).

and belive me, tubeless tires are not for battlefields!

dont know but compared to other systems opc is enough reliable i also prefer more manual

and cant understand why they not offer manual on 730

or at least choice of opc with clutch would be far better for that kind of job

, i have never seen any heavy hauler in real world with allison i know that they are popular in scandinavia

here we use wsk from zf and manual gearbox

than you have to see iveco from our army

trakker 500 6x4 small cab 12speed eurotronic gearbox ( automated)

truck has no ballistic protection , road going tires

i think i saw michelin xdy 3 on one of them

they tow 5axle bertoja trailers rated for 70ton of payload

before them we had man f90 33422 6x4 and 4axle schwarzmueller trailers and before them Maz-537 but for them fuel economy is not so good (1.87mpg)

because it is almost impossible to find driver who will not make any damage

also that engine has sweet spot from 1000rpm and scania recommends cruising speed ( 85-90) at 1000rpm and that will cause lot of downshifts

yep, and when drivers get engine with high torque they do not like to downshift till engine may maintane speed ore accelerate and they are surprized with poor fuel milage
