I run local intermodal out of SoCal
Pay is different that the van side. We get paid per mile (empty or loaded), load pay, and any extra pay (hazmat, live load/unload, detention). We also get our safety bonus paid per load and not quarterly like the van side does. Average weekly take home is between $900-1300.
Home every night and two days off each week. Depending on where you work you can have to option to work an extra 6th day each week.
Definetly more active compared to the van side. Average day is about 4-7 loads. Lots of fun tight areas to back into, and the hectic rail yards. But I'd rather work the rail yards than the ports any day.
This is info from my area, as each area is different depending on the number of rail yards in the area and number of customers. SoCal was crazy this holiday season, I heard we did more loads than ChicagoT_Bone, Grijon and Mictrucking Thank this. -
