    PORTAGE, Ind. --
A semi truck and a tollbooth caught fire on the Indiana Toll Road early Wednesday in northwest Indiana, causing extensive delays during the morning commute.

About 6 a.m., a semi heading east on the Toll Road caught fire while stopped at the Portage Toll Barrier, according to Indiana State Police. The fire then spread to a tollbooth.

No injuries were reported, police said.

All lanes of the Indiana Toll Road were shut down after the crash, but westbound lanes have since reopened, according to police.

Three eastbound lanes at the toll barrier were expected to reopen about 9:45 a.m., police said. The rest of the lanes will remain closed until a structural analysis of the facility can be completed.

"The Indiana State Police asks for the public to use caution and to also be patient while traveling in this area or to seek alternative routes," according to the statement.

The semi was loaded with potatoes and apples, police said. Damage to the structure and vehicle are estimated at $1 million.

The cause of the fire remains under investigation.

Ya I was surprised that even with it smoking that he would have either backed up or pulled it forward versus just leaving there

Thank God I've never had a tractor catch fire but when I was hot shooting one time. I was pulling a 40ft wells cargo trailer loaded with about $80k worth of teddy bears. Anyhow I saw smoke and sparks coming from the truck. I pulled over and then saw fire. I dropped the landing gear as fast as I could and pulled my truck forward. Grabbed the fire extinguisher put that sucker out. To my surprise an old towel had somehow gotten wrapped around my exhaust. I was able to pull it out see there was no major damage and hooked back up my trailer. My first thought was try and save the load.

I've never seen something like this, but it doesn't surprise me. I suppose, it could have gone unnoticed and the stopping fueled it somehow,,,,,or the rumble strips woke the driver up.:biggrin_25518: :biggrin_2554:

Maybe he didn't want to pay the toll figured it would be cheaper to burn it down.
