If I was to buy a restored truck and trailer and use it for truck shows, fairs, etc what kind of license (plate) and insurance would be required ? This would be a "not for hire" vehicle and I would be the only one driving it. Would I have to pay heavy road use tax, 2290, etc if I was not using it for a business ? Would log books be required when driving the truck to shows and such ? Would IFTA be required ? Obviously all of what I have mentioned above applies to O/O but wondering how it works if the truck is not being used to haul in a commercial capacity. I've held a CDL with all endorsements for over 20 years so the license and experience is not an issue.

Thanks for any and all input.

Tag it as a RV, put "Not For Hire" on the door. Get insurance and Roll On

It's not a commercial vehicle. Tag both truck and trailer with historical plates. There are companies that sell insurance for historical vehicles that run limited miles.

The only exceptions I have heard of are agriculture and RV. In a farm truck, with a farm tag, I still had to have a temperary IFTA traveling out of state to pick up equipment. Every scale looked at it also.
I ran a log book just to cut down on the BS factor.
Liability insurance will do but some carriers will look at you cross eyed and turn you down.
Sounds like Cottonmouth has your answer but I would not blow by the scales with that like the horse haulers do. Expect to meet new people so always have your stuff in order.

    Lug-Nut and Cottonmouth85 Thank this.

Think @Long FLD and I got 'er nailed down. You most likely had stickers and a coloring book since you technically were working.

Still wouldn't blow past a coop tho

Yeah I've heard similar things about race rigs. But im not sure cuz I see plenty, even 'pro' teams wearing the not for hire badge.

They pull over pickups and trailers all the time in MN pulling track cars/snowmobiles headed to events that give cash prizes. Heck any enclosed trailer behind a pickup they pull over all vehicles here over 10k gvwt can be inspected. How would this be different? Several have been fined for no dot #, triangles, inspection sticker and extinguisher.

You can purchase non comercial plates though up to I believe 15k

It's not a commercial vehicle. They can pull anyone they want over but your no different than an RV or any other vehicle on the road with the possible exception of limited yearly mileage with your antique insurance policy if you have one.
