In my state, and the states I drive in, you don't stop for a school bus with it's stop lights flashing on a4-lane, or more, divided highways with a physical median or barrier, such as concrete wall or raised concrete median. A grass median is a barrier and counts the same as a Jersey wall, for example. Cars & trucks are stopping because they don't know the rule. Obviously once the jackwad in front of you stops you have to stop. But I was beside a dump truck today on a road exactly like a divided interstate highway, with a wide grass median between opposite direction traffic. He smoked his brakes trying to stop for a school bus going the opposite direction. SMDH!
I've looked up the actual legal code in the state this occurred, which is the same as my home state. It's only a matter of time before some nitwit calls in to complain with my truck & trailer number.
The rule is if the there is any sort of barrier to traffic, Jersey wall, grass median, raised curb on a 4 lane divided highway DON"T STOP FOR OPPOSITE DIRECTION SCHOOL BUS. If there is just a painted line or turning lane, you DO stop. Before you believe the law is different in another state ask to see that law. "Everybody knows" is not a law.

If the road looks like this, STOP for school bus, no matter which way it's going.
If the road looks like these, DON"T STOP for school bus going opposite direction.

In New Mexico, even the emergency responders shut down lights and sirens,

Yes, kids shouldn't be walking towards a divided highway barrier, but.... their ball, pet, best/girl friend jumped it.
Do you really wanna be that guy? "just saying"crb Thanks this. -
great illustrations, gracias!

In Michigan if there is a physical barrier between traffic lanes, you don't stop. If there isn't, you stop.
The biggest two problems we have here is this
One is people stopping on a freeway for emergency vehicles, you DON'T stop.
The other is stopping at every intersection when the lights are out. We are supposed to stop at major intersections. A lot of rear end accidents happen because no one gets you don't stop. -

Not if it's as described in OP. Ohio state law is the same. If it's divided with some sort of barrier you don't have to stop.

We spend $13,000 per student per year. They play dodge ball during school hours. I say, let them pretend the world is a real life game of Frogger.

Thanks for bringing up the subject, and I have only stopped on a "divided (non-barrier) highway.
With that said I did run into a somewhat similar situation a couple of weeks ago with a heavy haul unit coming at me.
This was on a 2 lane road with wide shoulders in northern Indiana (think double wide territory) I was heading west with no one in front of me this is coming up on a very small town, really just a wide spot in the road with a little strip mall on the north side.
At any rate, up ahead I spot an east bound wide load coming at me WITH a state Police escort, lights all a blaze, I slow to about 30, speed limit was 45, and I inch over onto the shoulder a bit, wide load had plenty of room but I did notice some mail boxes coming up on his side.
Would have been no issue and I would NOT have stopped for the SP escort, just roll on past, except this time a small pickup pulls out of the strip mall and turns into my lane traveling west also, sees the escort and locks them up, now I have no where to go because he literally pulled out in front of me, I got stopped because I was covering the brake when I saw him coming out, but that could have been bad.
I have never read, or been told about having to stop for a police escort on a wide load, and I have been out here a while, just never ran into that situation before, thoughts, experiences?, Heavy Haul guys? sorry to the OP for hijacking the thread.Lostkeys Thanks this.
