Truck has done this periodically since I bought it, now she won't start.

All dash lights are working fine, but at key turn, I hear a click - and no crank.

Any ideas on where to start looking?

Grrrr. I post this - tap on starter with wrench, click, click . . Vroom!

Something needs attention, I'm sure of that.

Yep, if you can tap the starter and it starts? Then there you go!
plus changing a starter isn't that hard, a couple wires, and bolts, anyone with a IQ of 80 can changes a starter, as long as you have some basic tools

Not trying to scare blairandgretchen, but if the bolts gall up coming out whoo what a chore. Naturally unhook ground cables first. Unhook grounds on starter zip tie them thru the hole, same with hots. Keeps them togather you be surprised how going back things can look freaky lol. 5/8 shallow well 12 pt socket and really good extension and long handle ratchet with a 3/4 and a 3/8 is all you need.

We we have had trouble doing the same thing with reman Delco's right out of the box lately. So we been going back new or gear reduction.

What wore out said. Starter bolts are steel and the housing is aluminum. If the bolts start to tighten up on the way out...STOP!! Better yet, just to be safe, hit the bolts with penetrating oil and let them sit over night. If you strip those aluminum threads, you're looking at a heli coil for sure.

Blair, last thing is place the old and new starter side by side to be sure the nosecone setting is the same. They generally are but that cone is adjustable and it can be clocked to fit your application.

Blair: I would check for open circuits ( bad connections) first on all terminals on starter, or at least tighten all connections. Unhook battery neg. first. Wore Out: What brand are those gear reductions you like and they interchange with a 42MT?

Denso R5 is what we been putting on. MHC kenworth seems to have the best deal in our area. They are a little pricey but starter problems are over. Sorry I can't remember what they cost.

Around here carquest has the best price on starters and alternators. No core charge either so you can rebuild old one.
