There are more than 500,000 motor carriers in the US with DOT #'s. Most of them have less that 3 trucks. The DOT was losing the battle with in office audits so that is why CSA and roadside inspections became the method of audit. But the number of trucks and miles per year keeps on increasing, overwhelming the inspectors. I don't know how it is going to play out, but the ATA and Truckload Carriers Conference seems to be doing a great job of spreading money around Washington DC to prevent meaningful reforms.

I just wonder why this driver who killed 6 people is on the loose? You would think someone
who caused an accident that killed and injured so many people, and has a previous history
of not appearing in court would be considered not very likely to appear in court. How did this
guy make bond? He is not a resident of Tennessee. What was the amount of bond posted to
release him and who paid it for him? Typical lousy newspaper reporting no information of any
substance. I wonder what the families of the people this scumbag killed think of the local law
enforcement and court system in Chattanooga. This guy probably already has another job
driving a truck for another fly by night outfit.
