Hey gang - I've been thinking about doing a custom hood scoop on the top of my hood. Non functional of course, just something that would really stand out and scream 'power'. I'm curious though about the DOT rules for this.
I can't seem to find any specifics on what is permitted and what's not. Obviously I know the basic 'no obstructions' rule for windshields for things like stickers and papers, and I've even heard of people being warned for having a GPS mounted in the wrong place. In regards to customization to the hood itself, I recall seeing some mention of nothing being permitted 2 inches above the top of the steering wheel, but that was for cars I believe.
Seems to be a very gray area here for semis. Does anyone know what the specific rule would be for a permissible height of a custom hood scoop? Thanks!
What are the rules with hood scoops?

I don't think you'll get much flak from the DOT if it doesn't obstruct your view, but you will get a lot of eyerolling from people that know anything about trucks.

"Screams power"? Maybe to the little kid in the Smart car passing you. Doubt the DOT will say anything though. They'll be laughing too hard.

The way I would look at it is to keep it from coming higher than the edge of the front of the hood from the driver's seat view. Kinda like a crack in my windshield. If all I see is hood behind the crack, how is that obstructing my view?americanmadetrucker and Dominick253 Thank this. -

A big Wing and some Fart Cans on the Exhaust will complete the scream.

Either make it functional (yeah, they make em for KW) or just go down to autozone and pick one up from the tool isle. 3m sticky taper 'er on and don't even paint it.
