Before you change it you need to know what kind of antifreeze you're running. In the filter there can be different additives or non at all.

    Dave_in_AZ Thanks this.

Here's a good article describing the different types of coolant. You want to make sure it is "low silicate", which I think most are. I thought that was baloney, until I saw 1st hand what can happen to the block and liners with the wrong coolant. http://www.truckinginfo.com/article...ch-do-you-know-about-heavy-duty-coolants.aspx

Good article. My suggestion.... if you don't know what's in it it's probably time to flush and change it. No matter what coolant that's in it I would suggest getting test strips to make sure all is ok. It's a lot more important than most drivers realize.
If I were unsure what was in it or knew it needed changed I would go to an ELC. if you do make sure your filter is a "blank" with no additive. You can tell if a filter has addative by shaking it. If it rattles it has addative in it.
Also I always buy premixed. Tap water in cooling system is bad news. Mixing your own requires deionized water.

It's a good idea at least a few times a month to turn the Shutoff Valve on and off to prevent it from seizing up.

Once it seizes up, if you want to have it working properly againyou, will need to pull the old one out and install a new one which you may have to drill the old one out if it is stuck in there.
