After reading 396.11 I do not see a specific time. Most companies require you too show 15 minutes. If your going to crunch time and show 5 minutes, you are sure going to catch flak if you get inspected. But if you can do a complete and thorough PTI in say 10 minutes, more power to Ya.

I think 15 minutes has always been the norm because on paper logs that the least amount of time you can show with electronic logs you can log it to the minute. If you really want to do it correctly hit on duty do the pre trip jump back in and logged off duty see how long it took you

You can do less than 15 on paper. Just flag it with the amount of time it took. Example, come down to on duty at 1900 do something for 7 minutes and write it in remarks that it took 7 minutes in x location.

Flag something else that it took 8 minutes and bam! There's a 15 time frame so you don't have a headache doing your hours at the end of the day.

No, I do not do this as I never touch 70 hours and I'm home every weekend. So I try to burn hours so I can feel good that I worked x amount.

I think the pre-trip is the pilot checking to make sure the engines are still attached under the wing-a-ma-things
