Has anyone outside of the local area driven their POV to the TMC orientation? I'll run this idea by my POC sometime this week, but I'm just curious if anyone has has driven 500+ miles to orientation in their own vehicle. From what I'm reading online, the main reason they'll likely say no is that there's a chance that I could get paired up with an instructor out of the school house.
It would be nice to have my car while I'm out there (if this is an option). It's a late model vehicle with no reliability issues. It gets 45+ MPG on the highway, so it would actually save them money (vs. reimbursing towards a bus or plane ticket). If they say no...I'll likely just go ahead and get a plane ticket (it would probably be smarter to just hit the 'easy' button and do that). Thoughts?
Anyone outside of the local area drive their POV to the TMC orientation?

I used to work for TMC. I didnt drive to orientation, but after getting an extra vehicle, I did keep one in Des Moines for use while in town for years. Parked up in the lot behind the wash bay. Occasionally it got snowed in up there. On a side note, I really miss TMC sometimes. Often wish I had never left. I was there almost 17 years.

That's a good idea. If I make it through and was going to be in the area often enough, I'd consider doing that.

I'd fly out there if you can afford it. I did when I went to orientation. TMC will reimburse you up till the full cost of a bus ticket. You have to make up the rest. But its worth it. A few guys from my area that went spent 24+ hours on the bus and came in after midnight Sunday night, they were very road weary. I flew and was at the hotel at 11 am Sunday and was rested for the start on Monday morning.
Having a car is great at the hotel as the bus to go to Walmart only goes out once or twice a week (at least when I was there) so being able to go out at night to the store or whatever when ever is really nice but you'll be a popular guy in your group as many won't have a car. We had two in our class, one of them was my roommate so I lucked out. -
Yeah...they'll reimburse me about ~$250 towards a plane ticket, would leave me about $150-200 out of pocket. That wouldn't be bad (and would beat a bus ride or being packed into a rental car with a few other guys).
