Rambler, the diner is still open in Deepwater. My favorite place to eat in N.J.
I used to stop at The Bayou Gold in Vinton,La.It was like having your own private truckstop.Nicest people I ever met.If you bought 100 galllons you got $ 5 off your meal.Like I`ve said before,I meet good people everywhere.Another truckstop that had good employees was the Silver Spur in Pharr,Tx.The truckstop itself wasn`t my favorite but the people were.Borrowed my friend Roys car many times.

I agree it is a ghost town--don't know if you had ever been through when it was open--but the lovely woman that ran the restaurant(the last 20 yrs or so)COULD COOK boy could she--also grew her own chilis--made her own powder for her sauces--My wife is still devastated by this--I used to bring home a baggie of red powder one week/green the next--we both miss it!
    Just my$.02:biggrin_25514:

The Henhouse on 287 in Henrietta, TX. You'd play hell finding a truckstop like that any more. The guy there back in the 80's used to take personal checks for fuel or even cash personal checks for us if we needed the cash. Of course, cashing a check for drivers wasn't all that unusual back then.

But we used to stop at the Henhouse to fuel up on the way back in from the Panhandle and he had a water hose by the fuel pumps. He'd fuel up for us while we went in to drink coffee and if you wanted him to, he'd close the traps in the bottom middle, stick the water hose over in there, then turn it on full blast and let it run the whole time you were inside.

Then when you'd get out to the edge of town on 82 headed east at the top of the first hill, all you had to do is stop just over the hill with your nose pointed downhill and open the traps. Presto - free sloshout/washout by the time you get to Nocona.

That probably solves a mystery for some of you 'oldtimers' about all of the cow #### on the eastbound side of 82 east of Henrietta. I guess I feel kinda bad about it now, thinking back on it. LOL

I-90 In Jamestown, ND is a great little mom n' pop truck stop! I cant remember the name or exit number but there are signs...

They've got a GREAT dinner Great food and CHEAP! and everything can be made to go, they have FREE Wifi, showers, c-store, and truck stuff. Theres even a shop!

Then the Road Island TS right off I-95 is also VERY worth stopping at. They DO charge for parking unless you fuel or have work done at the shop. But they have a Huge C-Store, Pretty nice $6 Showers, and the best resturant i've eaten at in a LONG time. I got Chicken Parmisian, there was a TON of pasta, great sauce, a giant piece of chicken, came with 2 BIG pieces of Garlic bread, and a BIG cup or parmisian cheese all for $8!!!! And again every thing can be made to go, the menu was HUGE! And they had a HUGE parking lot, not so much fun in the winter with the snow and ice, but still an actull place to park up north!

I'm not an old timer either but this place was already old when I started going there in the 90s--The New England Truck Stop on US 20 in Sturbridge, MA. They'd have you spin the big wheel for prizes after fueling. Anyone else remember what they won? Some were little things but I did win a nice CB radio once.

Also, just south of Alligator Alley on the way to or coming back from Miami I liked the Seminole T Truck Stop on US 27. They had great BBQ, tiki hut bars, TV (all outside) and a lot of mosquitos.

Let me tell you about my TIME WARP---OR WHATEVER!! I'm an old timer with a question for any other old timers out there. Does anyone else feel like you were stuck in some kind of a time warp?? I began my truckin career back in the 50s--- Actually 1947 as an 8 yr. old kid hanging around a truckstop that my Dad managed. I trucked over the road for 47 years after I done my duty with hootie, beginning around 1959. I'm now retired [as well I should be] and I have come to think that some how while all the miles rolled by and after looking out a windshield for so long, the world went and changed--- but I kind of didn't. All of a sudden POOF! all this technoledgy has taken over and I'm like the ole girl that was -- [pregnant, on the wrong train, and didn't have a ticket]!!! Don't get me wrong, I know time waits for no one, but I have all this memory in my head and there are fewer and fewer of my kind left. I can tell younger folks some of my storys, but I think they think I'm BSen. So here it is 2011 and where did all the time go?? And thats all I got to say about that! for now.--- I'll post some more about some of the old truckstops of my times on another post. Happy trails Levi39:biggrin_2554:

I use to get my speedometer to do wierd stuff by turning the key off ond on. I could also get my 67 mph truck up close to 100 by doing tricks with the clutch.lol

I once stopped at a truck stop cafe [ at least they had a parking lot big enough for several large trucks] it was in Ohio on rt.6. I decided to stop and get a burger and a cup of coffee. I sat down at the counter and noticed a lot of girls in very short skirts all around the place. I asked the waitress for a burger and coffee and she looked at me like I was nuts. she said all they had was coffee. At this time I looked and seen the grill was rusty. lol All they had on the menue was coffee and beaver! I got an order of both. :yes2557: Levi39.

My, grandad and mamaw had a little resturant on rt 60 in ky, before the i 64 interstate was built. There was an international truck garage/dealer across the road. I was about 6-8 years old, remember the chicken trucks best, i would sit and watch them old trucks go by all day. Bet them truckers got tired of blowing that horn at me.:biggrin_25523: my little sister would crawl up in the laps of some of the drivers and share thier meal with them, mamaw would scold her, but them truckers would just laugh and watch her eat. i can remember it was big doings when i got to go with dad and eat at the bus stop diner. yeah, them was the days.
