Though I think it's a great idea for the vets, don't get me wrong, I'm a vet myself. But I'm about convinced the general majority of the population has forgot what our holiday's are about or they don't teach history in school or something? Maybe they are just correlating military related holidays with a chance to say thanks to our current military? :biggrin_2552:

4th of July is celebrating our independence from England and applies to all US citizens. Not fighting in Iraq or Afghanistan. Not our Air Force destroying a bunch of aliens.

The same thing with Memorial Day which is the remembrance of soldiers that have died and not the ones that are living.

Veterans Day is honoring our countries soldiers living and dead, past and present.

But what do you expect when many think Christmas is all about a little fat man in a red suit.... :biggrin_2559:

The Declaration Of Ibndepence gave us freedom . Our people serving in the military since allow us to maintain that freedom . (Although I personally didn't believe if we didn't stop the communists in Viet Nam they'd be invading our shores next )

That's why we have Veterans Day! Independence Day is commemorating the specific moment that happened on July 4, 1776.

I guess it all started Memorial Day. All you heard about was the living soldiers because of our current campaign. When the true meaning of the holiday is about the soldiers that have died for our country. Hence "Memorial".

Honor our soldiers everyday. But when a holiday rolls around, let's hear about it true meaning and not put it in the background just because of our current campaign.

Over the years holidays get misconstrued because many don't know what they meant to begin with.

One can google each holiday and see the real meanings.

Do you guys ever actually go get these free meals? I would feel embarrassed to take my dd-214 in there and say I want a free meal cause I was in the service. Especially with all the people hurt right now by our economy barely making ends meet.

I got a free meal at Applebee's Veterans Day . They weren't even asking for any type of ID .
Why be embarrassed getting a $15 meal ? How much fuel have you bought from that truckstop chain in the past year ? Are you embarrassed using their rewards card ?

    MNdriver and Winkjr Thank this.
