Well I come and go at a truck stop, when I do my business I leave. This is a little advice for you new drivers us old ones know better. Very few real deals are to be had at truck stops. Like the guy said if it sounds to good to be true it probably worth backing away.

This might be funny, although takes a little preparation. Get you a bunch of Pesos and when you see them doing their tricks leave your wallet in your truck and just carry the pesos. When they cry foul just exclaim "what, my money ain't no good here?"

I used to see the same group of 'monty tossers' in truckstops and rest areas in the midwest, for years. Chicago, St. Louis, Indianapolis. All over the place. Why do I remember them? One of the scammers was a man who was a 'guest' of a correctional facility I worked in, in the late 70's. I recognized him, he never quite recognized me.
The last time I saw that gang was probably 12 years or so ago. I had fueled up at that nasty Pilot in Indy, grabbed a sandwich, and pulled nose in to a parking spot at the end of the lot to eat, and catch up my log book. I usually don't park that way.
It was daylight. The guy I recognized walked up to my truck, gave me the 'Oh, Driver, you need to come over here...some stupid driver is giving away money' crap. My window was rolled down a bit. I just looked at him and said 'Do I look stupid? XXXX off!'
Since I was pulled in, nose first, I was between the ends of two trailers. We were more or less out of sight, even though it was broad daylight. I don't know if this jerk had help, hanging around out of sight, but he started screaming at me to get out of the truck, pulled a knife, was waving it around. 'Yeah you are stupid, get out of the truck' and so on. I didn't have a cell phone at the time. I just sat in the drivers seat, smiling at him, and reached under my drivers seat for the only weapon I had, my hammer, but I didn't let him see it. He kept screaming at me, waving the knife. I smiled.
He knew I got something out from under the seat, but wasn't sure what. I was trying to smile as broadly as I would if I had just dragged a bazooka out from under the seat.
'You don't have anything. GEt out of the truck XXXX!'
I smiled.
I noticed, as crazy as he acted, he never touched my truck door. He wasn't sure if I had 'something' or not.
I then realized my truck door was not locked. I kept smiling, and reached up an locked it. That's when he really went nuts...but he never made a move to touch the truck.
I backed out of the parking space, and drove out of the lot..with him following me, screaming. When I was 2-3 trucks away from where I had parked, i could see 3-4 of his friends came out of the shadows to join him.
I drove across the intersection to the 'Mr Fuel' truckstop, parked, went to a payphone, and called the police. A detective showed up, took my descriptions, gave me the 'Yeah, we know about them.' and drove off.
What I learned. Don't park in that nasty pilot in Indy. Don't park nose in, where nobody can see you in your cab, or the cab, and don't expect much from the police, since we're just dumb truckers.
For a while I was seeing a totally different 'monty' gang working truckstops in the Southeast, Tenn, Ala, GA. Haven't seem them in a while.
Oh, the other thing I learned, the people who come up to you smiling in truckstop parking lots, usually are up to no good, and 'Hey Driver' is usually followed by some jerk trying to sell you something, cheat you out of something, or rob you.
I'm very nasty to people I don't know, who walk up to me in truck stops. -
Had some guys try and rope me into the same thing at a truck stop off of I-35 in Oklahoma City. I told the guy trying to get me to come over to see "the driver who won thousands at a casino and was giving away money" (via some three card monty deal at the back of a parked truck) to leave me alone or he'd get the Nancy Kerrigan treatment with my aluminum tire thumper. He started to get nasty and called over his buddy, and I slipped on my bluetooth headset and started making a call. Him, his buddy, and about four other guys immediately scattered like roaches and were gone within seconds, all heading in different directions. They thought I was calling the cops, but I was really just making a call home to the wife.
I didn't know this was a widespread problem. -
