I was getting service at a TA and the guy changing my tire was training a new recruit. He was showing him the ropes.
Long story short, the trainer asked the trainee if he was going to take the next truck and if he wanted to put himself on the clock.
I was like huh?
I thought these guys were hourly. So I asked the trainee about it.
He told me that the assignments are there. Its up to you how many you want to do each day. When he finishes a truck, he's off the clock. If he finishes one before the 1 hour minimum, he'll get a flat rate. $160 to the shop.
I guess its hourly / commission.
TA and PETRO mechanics salary.

every time I have gone into Petro in Portage WI, they are all over my truck like flies on honey. I had them align my tires up so I could get access to my valve stems the first week I bought the truck and they charged me $75 to do 7 of the 8 tandems. Go figure right.
Took em about 12 minutes. Two teams of 3 hit that truck. One with a wrench taking the nuts off, one taking tires off and another putting tires and nuts all back on. -
Yep. I had a trailer in for service at the TA in Cartersville, GA a couple weeks ago and the guys told me they were comission-based.

the $160 may be a little off, depending on what the job paid. they are commission based, I believe starting pay is 36% of parts and labor, not sure about tire sales, and up from there depending on experience and certifications, its ok as long as the location is busy but if there is no work, no $ although you are guaranteed like $10-12 an hour for the weeks hours. the location closest to me doesnt stay that busy and their helath benefits dont kick in until the 1st new quarter after your 90 days so I didnt persue it.

Sounds kind of like a hair salon where the girls pay a percentage to the owner for their spot as rent.

They are most likely payed flat rate. Their is a flat rate book that tells what each individual job pays.
Ex. Book says job takes 1 hour, tech finishes job in .5 hours. He is paid for 1 hour.
Ex. Book says job takes 1 hour, tech finishes job in 1.5 hours. He is paid for 1 hour.
The way they make money is to beat the clock and keep jobs rolling through. Not unusual for a tech to work 8 hours and get paid for say 10-12 hours.
The reverse can be true as well if you get some tough jobs or aren't efficient. Tech works 8 hours and gets payed for 6 as an example.
I kind of dumbed it down but I hope it makes sense.
In the 4 wheeler world this is how most shops are run.
