Hi Everyone,
I am looking for insight into a regional food column for my magazine. I have Jane and Michael Sterns 'Road Food' book and contact with them. I am wondering if having a regular column of a local place to eat great food is interesting for people. I know parking is an issue and distance from route so I am unsure how to most effectively approach a regional food piece.
What would be the most interesting and useful to you? What are you missing to make finding a great place to eat while on the road, easier?
Kind Regards,
Luisa Nims

Parking is the most difficult thing on planet earth for Truckers and just when you thought you could solve that problem you will find out it was the biggest mistake of your life to have truck parking available to truckers.
Most truck stops spend a small fortune cleaning up after the truck driver today
The urine bottles the garbage bags the nightmares they leave behind Pallets oil some times mass quantities of rejected food infesting the parking area and so on
Heck most rest area's are closed like in Louisiana Because it is too much money to maintain.
And if that didn't put the icing on the cake you will find dropped trailers in your lot and Drivers using your parking area to leave their equipment while they go home for a week or two
If you want too feed the trucker then you need to serve food like domino's
We'll Bring to you Jack
It's just a matter of time before walmart kicks every trucker out of their lots -
OP not sure what kind of food piece you think you can do without actually visiting the place yourself and interviewing people on the spot. as for trucker wise if the place isnt close to a truck parking lot most wont go there or be able to due to company restrictions and what not.

parking is definitely an issue. I am trying to figure out what else needs to be considered in an article.
Thanks!

I'm somewhat unusual in terms of truck driver (not a penny pincher) and I enjoy good food, especially local fare where applicable. If I had more than 15 hours in a location, I wasn't averse to taking a cab to a good restaurant, bar, or other popular attraction. Having lived in San Antonio for decades, it had dozens of "popular" Mexican restaurants on the river walk but the food was mostly mediocre at best. If you wanted really good mexican food, you had to know where to go and avoid the tourist spots. So, I'm not sure what your advocating, but if a driver is not motivated to seek out good food and use a taxi if need be, I'm not sure how successful a column like your proposing may or may not be. But just because a restaurant is popular with the tourists because of their atmosphere, that doesn't necessarily translate to "really good food" and if it's not "really good" I won't go to too much trouble to get to it.

Parking is most important. Near an interstate is number two.

Thanks for the responses. I am trying to figure out how to use my RoadFood source in the best way for drivers. So two criteria will be parking and close to an interstate besides great recommendations. What about nutrition/health related criteria? Regional specialities? cab distance to restaurant from the nearest truck stop? ....
Thanks, Anything else?

Jan and Michael stern are leaches that write outright lies Their books suck. I am positive they take payola for a good write up.

i doubt nutrition/health would be a huge factor, as nearly anything mom & pop would be better than the typical fast food garbage available at most all truck stops in recent years.

Hi Bruce,
Can you explain your experience with the Stern's? I was a bit surprised by the comment. Have you had unsatisfactory experiences with their recommendations?
Kind Regards,
Luisa
