Since getting back into trucking this year after decades of "desk jobs", I've managed to trim down. I rarely eat restaurant meals and get to a Walmart or other grocery market at least once a week to restock my supplies.

    My shopping priorities:

    - Fresh produce
    - Whole grains
    - Whole grain bread (without high fructose corn syrup)
    - Raw nuts
    - Dried fruits
    - Olive oil (the best possible)
    - Basalmic vinegar
    - Canned mackeral, tuna, and chicken (going for lowest sodium level possible)
    - Plain kefir, if available (amazing probiotic, like yogurt you drink)
    - Fruit juices (without sugar or other additives, only fresh fruit juice)
    - Honey - I use this in place of sugar. Best if raw and organic.

This shopping strategy avoids almost 90% of the "food" shelves, the processed foods that are in fancy printed packaging. They are generally higher cost, lower in nutritional value, and have ingredient lists that read like novels... or like horror stories.

If you choose to bring a bicycle with you, I recommend a folding bike. I used to keep mine in the passenger side floor well. It was out of the way while I was in the truck, and it was easy to get to it- just open the passenger door and it was right there.

Your best bet for grocery shopping is to avoid truck stops altogether. Find a local market- they will have a much better selection of fresh produce and healthy foods at much lower prices than the truck stops. Sometimes you may have to walk a little bit, but that's not a bad thing. Bring a backpack so you can carry your purchases back to your truck in comfort. Or ride your bike instead of walking.

Learn how to cook in the truck. Google 12v appliances if you are not allowed to have an inverter. Preparing your own meals makes it much easier to be healthy and still eat good-tasting food. Plus, as a bonus, you will save money. Plan ahead for busy days. It's hard to resist the lure of the buffet when you know it will take an hour to make your own dinner. I cooked large portions on days I had more time. Then I could simply heat up leftovers when I got really busy.

Up until now all my "cooking" involves taking a thermos to go get free hot water in the truck stop. My hot meals are either oatmeal (with wheat germ, chopped almonds, and chopped dates) or cous cous (with olive oil, garlic salt, sun dried tomatos, and pecans).

Cold lentil soup out of the can is a great summer soup.

Still trying to work out a good way for cooking, and might have the answer soon. I look forward to boiling some eggs and steaming potatoes for cooler storage.

By the way, eggs are the most usable source of protein. 98% of the protein in eggs is usable, meaning that the 8 essential amino acids are almost perfectly balanced. Compare that to about 30-38% of protein in beef.

Thank you for the input, it has been one year since I started this post. I've taken the advice hare and im happy to say, while it wasn't easy i've dropped 25 lb. just had my yearly physical today and I passed. the hardest part is finding time to walk, I drive over 3K miles a week, this last year i've been home for a total of 12 days. I bought a truckers crockpot, this is probably the best investment i've made, it's awesome. Thanks again for the advice.

I like eating at Petro because of the good salad bars. Definitely helps doing that while staying away from the buffet. They have healthy menu options too that are tasty. And cut down or lay off soft drinks and coffee and you'd be amazed at the difference after about 2-3 weeks. We all get stuck having to grab something quick but Subway is healthy as long as you get the list of certain healthy sandwiches.

Being healthy does not sell unneeded visits to the doctors office, service, meds, special gimmicky foods etc.. Junk food is profitable and cheap to keep on shelves. Man I wish it was easier to eat better, but living on the road does make it much harder, especially with so many places not allowing trucks to park near because of some bad apples in the industry trashing these places. The biggest wtf thing is the customers we truckers haul for are the ones killing us with the food aka profit poison, but we need a job eh?

I agree with all about dropping the carbs down and try to completely remove the necrotic cell killing sugar. I notice great weight loss under 100g of carbs, 50g and lower to increase weight loss, I've gotten real low but get cranky so I like to keep between 50-100g. Better insulin sensitivity which makes the insulin you are making work better at lowering blood glucose levels and not redlining the pancreas to make too much insulin and killing beta cells in the process which never grow back aka type 1 then when they all die.

Sugar alone, try it 0 grams of sugar on the road. It's very hard, but can be done, but more than likely 3-5g of sugar will slip in from somewhere even if you don't add candy accessories like ketchup, jelly etc.. Sugar is added to everything just about. Juice is a huge no no, no fiber to properly digest the sugar like in real fruit.

Ever notice how people drinking diet soda are usually obese, and they are always drinking 0 calorie soda? I know of many people who started drinking diet sodas and just got bigger, I can't believe how people drink soda like its water. Milk too this is my weakness here I love milk, but I gain the most weight when I have a pint or two a day. 22 grams of sugar in that pint from the lactate, evil healthy marketed milk. I love that remark another person said about cows milk being for a 200pd calf to make them a 2000 pd steer etc..

It's this easy really. Drink water too. Stay away from restaurants even the so called "healthy" ones, there's no such thing. Subway is mostly bread and sodium filled cold cuts.
