I don't know about anyone else but this one has been hard for me.
I've recently been told that I have borderline diabetes, Don't have to take meds yet, but if I don't change
my eating habits I will, and could be forced off the road.

Are there any Diabetics out there that can give me some advice on how to watch my diet on the road.
The buffet at the Iron skillets are killing me. Love that place.

    Eliminate bread and soda
Replace with cans of corn and beans maybe some tangerines if you don't do canada

Buy a bike one of the best investment you'll make for your truck. Exercise + more takeout options + save from idling from cooking out the truck.

Things to avoid that will make your blood glucose go zoooming up: Mashed potatoes, french fries, corn, carrots, any pasta, more than one piece of bread, rice, noodles in a cup, bananas, fruit drinks or soda.

Things that will help maintain good glucose levels are first eating at least two cups of raw vegetables or fruit at each meal, drinking more water, and making sure to eat some protein with anything else you eat. Too many carbs, you get sleepy or groggy. Too much protein and not enough carbs, you get hungry sooner. Balanced and you stay sharp. Get in some walking too.

A good book you could get to help manage your blood insulin levels using only food is "Mastering the Zone". The author's whole premise is managing insulin levels using food in a balanced way. It's done with blocks in his book, and 1 block = 7g of protein, 9 g of carbohydrate, and 1.5g of fat.

Want to try an example of one of his emergency meals that is insulin balanced? 2 plain small hamburgers (no cheese), throw away 3 pieces of the bread. and eat it. No fries, no soda, instead have water. That will hold you for about 3 hours.

    1.walk
    2. water, not soda. No soda.
    3. walk
4.cut down on any and all animal products.I did not say eliminate.. I said cut down.
That includes gravy which is made with milk. Cows milk is supposed to turn 200 lb calf into a 2000 steer.
    5. Cut out extra salt. What's already in your food is way more than you need. Trust me, you do not want go be forced to a "absolutely no salt" diet.
    6. Drink a glass of water if you're hungry. Then a small amount of food. Real food, the prepackaged "snack"foods will make your diabetes worse.

Start with these suggestions, about as easy as you're going to find.
Even one lap around the tractor/trailer is better than a lap around the buffet.
    Good luck

Instead of pastries and cookie snacks, I've switched to fresh baby carrots, sugar snap peas, bananas, and apples. All available at Walmart.

The only things I buy at truck stops are coffee and juice. Rarely eat any meals at truck stops or restaurants of any kind. Stock up at Walmart once a week and feeling much much better. I've lost 15 lbs since getting back into trucking.

Soda pop is loaded with high fructose corn syrup and salt. Google "Sugar: The Bitter Truth", about an hour long video on Youtube. Extremely informative and good starting point for research. After doing my own research about HFCS I decided to cut it out of my diet altogether, and was pretty shocked at how many foods have it. Breads, cookies, cereal, sweet relish (the second ingredient!), etc. etc.

I've much happier eating fresh produce than bread items anyway. Grains for me are a bowl of oatmeal with wheat germ, chopped dates, and chopped almonds in the morning... then "Hint of Salt" Wheat Thins (about the healthiest major brand grain snack out there).

Since I've also cut way back on salt I've found that foods that I used to like I can't stand anymore... they're too salty. There's another weird reason to cut back on salt I read about earlier today: African tribes living in areas with a lot of mosquitos eliminate salt from their diet during mosquito season in order to reduce their appeal to the insects.

Cut way down on all the sugars and carbs you can in your diet. Start reading nutritional information labels on food. The android market has a few tools to help you with this. Walk daily at least for 20 minutes. Water will be your new favorite drink 64oz a day. Look into the atkins diet (it really helped me). Get a glucose meter and start tracking your levels and write them down along with carb intake, what you ate, drank and exercise levels. I built a simple spread sheet on excel, My Dr loved it. You will see a pattern and should be able to correct it. I noticed everyone talked about eating fruit.....DON'T DO IT..... Remember that any food that is produced from a flower is a fruit...i.e. higher sugar levels. Go with Strawberries or Raspberries if you need some sweet fruit they are pretty low on the glycemic index chart. My Blood sugar was 320 two weeks ago and set me back 3 weeks from starting trucking school. Now it bounces between 86-98 and I dropped 14lbs in two weeks. Seriously best of luck.

Ahhh beer.....We all agree the liver is evil and must be poisoned from time to time. If you are doing the low carb thing and need to keep your net carbs low I suggest Michelob Ultra light. Is it the best beer you'll ever drink???? No but it is a beer that is low carb which will help you keep your blood sugar levels down. All this boils down to how bad do you want to stay off medications and not get the one year D.O.T card. It's life boys and girls it is full of choices.
