I drove for H.O. Wolding back in the early 80s. I remember they would cut the air conditioning belts off the trucks to save on fuel. Was there a couple of years never moved "up" to an truck with air conditioning. Hauled paper out of Fort Howard in Green Bay every Saturday night for Monday morning delivery in New York City. Hauled steel out of Jersey Shore PA back to Chicago most backhauls. Paid hub miles and drove about 3,600 per week. Never log book legal.

We could not drive the tollroads. Through the center of Chicago and 2 and 6 (or 30) across Indiana and Ohio. This was back when IL, Ark and a few other states were still at 73,280 vs. 80,000.

Anyone remember Rube's Truckstop in New Jersey. Had a gogo joint with the girls wearing bikinis that served food (had a large tough steak-cut from between the horns). The owner, Rube, wore a pistol (revolver) on his belt.

This all was back before we had CDLs. I had a chauffer's license from Indiana, even though I never lived in Indiana. No training at all. Started by leasing a tractor, took the written test and passed, then passed the driving portion (leasing company tester). I didn't even know how to hook up the trailer.

Oh, I remember Rube's. Always tried to make it a rule to never go there. It reminded me of some 3rd world place.

I would only go there empty. Whole area looked like a bombed out post nuclear war site.
