when i started trucking in 1991 i can't recall and back up's at the fuel island. and the process was much longer back then ....you had to get on the fuel phone give them all your info. some times they have to come out and get your tag number then go inside and run your fuel card...today we have swip & go more trucks stops and fuel lines....its get to be the fast food. their wasnt many fast food outlet in truckstop in 1991 so you had to go park and eat....now if subway gets back up the fuel island will back up.... it all seem to start changing in 2000

There were also many more smaller mom and pop truck stops scattered around the country that took the lions share of local and frequent business which have been bought out and shut down forcing everyone to the mega stops forcing crowding and descent.

Well... The obvious is probably more people now days have the ME ME ME attitude. They take breaks, get showers and food while at the fuel island. AND have the nerve the get mad at YOU when they're called out on it.

I think a lot of it has to be because of the numb nuts that the schools are puking out. What gets me is the truck stops don't ask for drivers to move their trucks like they use to also. I think Love's is the worst about this. Pilot is a close second, and now since pilot bought out flying J, they have gone to the toilet as well.

That's one reason I run local now. Haven't been to a t/s in four years. And I don't miss it

Mid morning, after breakfast and well before lunch seems to be the best time to fuel. But once it hits lunch time, it's game on until midnight. Always look for the guys pumping. If there's nobody pumping and just a parked truck (that's about 80% of the islands) you can bet somebody is inside buying food etc etc etc. so don't get behind him. I HATE this part of my job. Thanks to selfish SOB's.

UPS and line haul drivers like Yellow Roadway park in fuel islands a lot as well as many other drivers,,Do your fellow drivers right and never do it your self,,I always park,,I need the exercise and generally it is not to difficult,,When I park I can take my time,,
I was a the J one day near Joplin,,lanes on both side kept moving forward,,,I got out and the driver at the pumps in front of me was using whe water hose to bath,,he was from Pakistan,,guess in his country that's what they get when they fuel and get a free shower,,

Hang in there and at least we know you will never be the one blocking a fuel island,,

I'm a heavy hauler, 115' foot long, I fuel and move. I park in the back and walk in to get/do my other stuff. I guess that's why I'm not out of breath from walking from the first fuel island to the restroom, I swear some of these guys need to carry an oxygen bottle. I'm sure they are the ones that get pissed at the Dr. when he wont sign off on his medical.
