Found myself at the mercy of the shop on a run from California to Arkansas.
Needed a radiator replaced.
Called Freightliner in Odessa, quoted a price, $1300.
T/A charged me 2 hours @ $90 to run the parts, perfectly understandable and agreed.
Invoice time.
T/A charged me $1875.00 for the radiator + $180 to run the parts + $168 (TWICE) for the radiator fluid.
Grand total, $3029.50
Beware this shop.
Recently the entire staff has been replaced.
An outside mechanic was needed for the repairs as they did not have one on staff.
All in all, a complete nightmare...

When you call the dealer....you should have paid for the radiator over the phone.....
-
No the price you got from Freightliner was if you paid for it direct.
When the trkstp went and put it on their account they will mark it up.
Standard practice at many shops. Should of paid for it direct and had them pick it up.
How did they charge you two times for the radiator fluid, did you have them take it off the bill?
10 gallons of coolaint at what 16.00 a gallon would make it 160.00. Not sure the price. -
yep, should have paid for the radiator, it not a rip off, its normal business for any shop.
or you could have parked in the far corner and changed it yourself, if ya had the tools.
I guess the amount for labor wasn't a problem for ya.? -
At least you didn't eat the buffet and get the runs.
blairandgretchen and joseph1135 Thank this. -
A TRUCK STOP A RIPOFF? What is this world coming to? Honestly, I'm sorry to hear that, but you are exactly the kind of person they are looking for. Just curious, was it like Niagara Falls under the truck, or could you have limped it to a better place? Years ago, I knew my radiator was going south in my Western Star, but milked it along, until it just wouldn't cool anymore. I bought one of those new cores from Chicago at the time I think I paid $500 for it, put my tanks on, and I was on my way, but I'm sure you didn't have that option. Note: stay away from truck stop repair facilities unless the truck literally won't move, and even then, be wary.

The 30% mark up is normal but that is supposed to be for getting the parts, not charge him 2 hours labor to go get it and then mark it up.
Should be one way or the other.
But then most of have been ripped by the truckstop and TA is not different than most.
It always gets me to pay normal shop rates for mechanics that don't have any mechanic education and yes they need to start somewhere but one should not have to pay $90 hour for non educated mechanics. -
anytime ya get a repair done at a t/a or petro youre gonna pay more, even on a simple wheel seal deal. -
you got hosed
