IT MAY NOT HAVE BEEN IOWA, PLEASE READ WHAI I CAN RECALL.

So, Here's the deal. Last summer I was going through Iowa (I think), and I stopped at a truck stop to relieve myself. The place had an AWESOME looking barbecue joint in it, but I was under pressure and it was busy, so I left without getting anything except a bottle of soda, figuring I'd get by there in the near future. Then I got hung up on a Canada lane for a few months and by the time I got back into that area, I either haven't been along the same route, or I just keep missing it. The other explanation would be that it was somewhere along the Mn to Dallas lanes, possibly not in Iowa, and I haven't taken the same route through there. So, what I'm hoping is that I can describe the place to the best of my knowledge, and some of you fine folks could help me get back there. Please, this is about THIS PLACE or one like it only, but if you know of one on Washington State, PA, or Nevada that's not it, let's start a new Barbecue Thread (not a bad idea, since Texas has some Crazy spots that I'd love to know about, just not here). So, Here's what I remember, or think I remember:

    • Probably on the NE corner of an overpass off a north-south 4 lane divided HW (far right corner from a N-bound off-ramp, main road was going uphill toward exit).
    • Most likely BP fuel, possibly Shell. Definitely Mom and Pop, NOT a chain.
    • Good sized (for the area) parking area behind, made of tan colored class 5, not red clay or asphalt.
    • Restaurant was attached to the back of the store/fuel desk, but could also be entered from the back of the building. To get to the front of the store/fuel desk, there was a little hallway with a bunch of t-shirts folded in cubby hole type shelves. Restaurant also had a hot-to-go counter in the front half, for those who didn't want a sit down meal.
    • The front cashier/fuel counter was circular.
    • Could have been off I-35, but I really don't think so, more likely a US Highway.
    • I swear it was in IOWA, but I've recently been across that state just about every which way (where I'm at now). But could be Mo, Ok, Ks, or Ne.
    • I swear I was going North, but if I was going East, It would be on the SE corner of the overpass. Either way, it WAS the far right corner.
    • There wasn't much of anything else commercial around, except possibly an abandoned truckstop nearby.
    • I'll edit/update if my memory brings forth anything else.

Hopefully some of you can recall where I'm talking about, so we can try it before one of the megas gets their mitts on it and wrecks it. Thanks in advance.

Our definition of BBQ is cook up meat and splash bbq sauce on it,lol.I don't recall any fancy bbq joints.

OK, Maybe just maybe it wasn't Iowa, But it was real, smokehouse-cooked barbecue. The above description suggests something Flying J would try to pass off as BBQ.

Eastern Iowa ... Cedar Rapids used to have one of the major BBQ competitions.
