I am a new trucker about to embark OTR. When can a trucker drop his trailer on his 34 hour reset and bob tail it into town, or any where he wishes? Do some truck stops allow it? What about the carriers? If you want to explore some area in America where you are resetting, will you have to call a taxi, or rent a car to get you there and back?

Good questions ron,Not all but most truckstops do allow you to drop the trailer.I would look around the parking lot and see if any trailers are dropped. Then its best to go inside and check with the fuel island. Some require you to check your trailer in before dropping it otherwise it could get towed. The mega carriers more then likely will not allow you to bobtail anywhere. You'll need to find a different way to get around town.

Most of the big chain truck stops want let you drop a trailer. If you have to drop a trailer, go to the fuel desk and ask if it would be ok. Most of you mid to small trucks stops don't care. Make sure you have a lock to put on the King pin and trailer. Also, if you are a company driver. I don't think they would allow you too BT around, there policy truck and trailer has to remain together.

Yes, like others say. Make sure this is Ok with the owner of the truck. If you're working at a large company, and a fellow driver sees a trailer dropped, some are apt to drop a dime on you. Last place I worked it was automatic termination for dropping anywhere other then a regular d/h shpr/rcvr or a company yard, without prior authorization. Loaded or empty was irrelevant.

No company is going to allow you "sightsee" using their truck. Call Uber

Company I work for does. Boss has even encouraged it a couple times for a little break in the action.

I'm leased onto a carrier with terminals all over the country. Typically arrive at terminal and drop trailer then I'm on my own free will til they either reload the trailer or tell me they have no freight. Meanwhile during this time I can bobtail all over creation-- pure bliss.

I just had a delivery in Encinatas, CA this morning. Got QC message from my DM that there is a public beach a mile down the road and that we should ask the customer if we can just drop the trailer while they were unloading.

The wife and I had a very nice morning at the beach in SoCal.
