My husband recently started driving otr, his first state was PA, prior to going into Phili, he stopped at a rest area, and asked about truck stops towards the area, where he was to load the next day, the lady at the info center, told him which one to go to and not to use the one within Phili, as it was not safe, My question is, where would someone get the info as to which Truck stops are not safe for drivers on the east coast/midwest region.

I'm sure there are some unsafe truckstops out there; or at least truckstops that have a reputation for being unsafe.
Just because someone had trouble at a truckstop doesn't mean it is unsafe. Use good sense and caution and it's probably a lot safer than a lot of other things we all do routinely. -
I think she is talking about the Crocket truck stop. Last time I was there is was dirty and nasty and was propositioned by the nastiest lizerd I have ever came across.
There are truck stop guides available at most fuel stops, just pick the one you like. There is not much to go on as far as good stops and bad, he will need to learn by experience and reputations on the good and bad stops. Personaly I like the smaller stops and the chain I like is Loves. Over all they are clean and decent... -
any truck stop is a hell of alot safer than parking on the on/off anywhere

First of all, the closer you are to a major city, the less likely that you are in a very safe location. The more rural the area, the more likely you will be safe.
There are very few truckstops near the larger cities that I will use, or even stop at for fuel.
As a general rule, Petro's offer more security than do the other chains. Flying J's come in second, with Truckstops of America coming in third, in terms of security and overall problems.
Pilots offer the least amount of security, and someone could be getting murdered on the fuel island, and they wouldn't lift a finger to call for help. -

Welcome first and second, my dh tells me every day what route he is running and I look at the web site www.truckstopinfo.com it has LOTS of listings, easy to use and the info is usually right on the money. There are no saftey listings but most are ok....lot lizards are just part of the job and nobody seems to beable to get rid of them.....I help dh all the time with routes and stops just drop me a line if I can help.

this is really somewhat tough to answer, but, i'll say this for sure, any "inner ctiy" or surrounding major city truck stops can be extremely dangerous. Gary, Indiana comes to my mind, Miami, Florida and Ontario, California, are places that i stayed at, and made sure that my doors were locked, and i parked as close to the main building as i could. locking the doors, taking the key from the ignition, watching over your shoulders as you walk to and from the building, lit up parking lots, security guards, high fences, and making sure to "hide" things from plain sight when leaving the truck, and never, ever open your door when someone knocks, till you peer through the window first. always check the rear catwalk too.
when the terorists hit us back in 9/11, we were all told by the "experts" that as american's, we have to be lucky everytime...........the terrorists have to get lucky only once....................
apply that "logic" when going into most truckstops, for your own protection..........

What about the REST AREAS?
We have had some bad things happening up here lately at the Rest Areas..
There has been a couple of stabbings and robberies.
I don't think these places are SAFE any time of the day. -
Its been a few years, but the only real truck stop that I ever feared for my life, load, and sanity all at the same time was the Jersey City truckstop. I quit driving OTR because of places like that. Hunts Point is a paradise compared to some of the holes they try to get you into on the East Coast. As far as rest area's, the only ones that I have never had a problem with lot lizards, or homosexuals are in my home state of Nebraska.....even in Iowa, I had a problem with a homosexual following me into the rest room.
.02 cents given.
