You woke to do a pretrip... oh, I see -- been trucking for 1 year. That explains it.

It has nothing to do with gettin' a tire stolen... it has to do with actually doing pretrips.

I'd have to say that, in my rarely humble opinion, of a vast majority of OTR drivers only newbs do the full blown walk around, open the hood, smack every tire, check tread depth and grab the tire and shake to check for bearing wear, feel and check every belt and hose for wear, check all fluid levels, check all lights, check fire extinguisher and triangles and the rest of the more than 100 points covered in a regulation pre trip inspection. I'd say that owner operators are more likely to at least do a cursory pre trip than a company driver but generally speaking, the longer a driver has been active the less likely he/she is to do a real full blown pre trip. But since you ask the question you obviously have a differing opinion and you're certainly welcome to it... I speak my reality; feel free to do the same. Expostulate at length if you're so minded. I spent 20 years up on that stool, with my chin in the wind and my knees in the breeze with the majority of that time working as a produce pimp/chicken hauler. For 8 years my job was to drive 1000 miles a day. I'd load produce in Salinas, CA and have to make fourth morning, 5 A.M. delivery in Keene, NH... loosely translated that means that I had roughly 3 days and 17 hours to drive 3200 miles. I once loaded apples in Yakima, WA and drove 37 hours straight to make delivery at the market in St. Louis, 1650 miles away. I've put over 3½ millions miles in my rear view and do have some idea of what goes on out there. Thoughts, ideas, opinions and experiences are most gratefully received and considered.

I am so glad you posted that you believe some drivers may not be doing a complete and total pretrip each and everyday. I forgot to check the cotter key on my rear brake slack adjuster back on March 4, 2009 and I have been losing sleep over it ever since.
