The engine probably wouldn't get very good mileage at all, even with upgrades. Also naturally aspirated, so the black smoke would have you pulled over in a minute. I'm not entirely sure about this, but I think if you used it commercially, you'd lose the antique status with the EPA.

I think it would be fun to drive at least.

new motor is about the easiest thing to do unless you just want to restore it and look at it.

Personally I think old cars should be driven and old trucks should be worked. Breaks my heart to see an old pete or something hacked into a single drive axle and a flatbed towing somebodies camper

...unless you're a retired trucker and it's YOUR camper!
I met a driver like that that made his Pete longnose into his "Holiday Hotel", put a little 300hp cummins in it and said he got better mileage with that than with the original setup, and he got to finally actually be a 'tourist steering wheel holder'!

    Test:

Does anyone besides us old people have any clue as to what the lever is on the front drivers side of the engine that has the linkage hooked up to it.

Hint: It aids in starting the engine under certain conditions.

I really like the old cable operated range selector on the gearshift. There's nothing that sounds quite like a 220 with a straight pipe ran up the back of the cab.

Not sure if I qualify as an old person yet... it's a compression release. :yes2557:

You got it. You are now officially older than dirt.:biggrin_25525:

I have used the compression release on very cold mornings to get the engine spinning over, then release the lever to get the old engine to start. It also works good if the batteries are too weak to spin the engine over with full compression. Pull the lever, spin it up, release, and off you go.

I have owned or driven a few trucks with compression release, including the one in my avitar.

    Remember pump primers?

Remember 'em... hell, I was looking in desperation for the priming pump on this one when I had to change the fuel filter on the side of the road, lol.

Times have changed... spin the filter on, crank it... after about 15 seconds, VROOM!!!

No dipping fuel out of the tank to fill the filter. No pumping. No air to bleed. Now that's cool!
