Hi i just started my trucking company a couple months ago. I pay my drivers by the mile. I been writing them checks, however i need some advice on how to pay them should i take taxes from their checks? Or what kind of form should i use so they can report their income at the end of the year for taxes?
Anybody running a trucking business who can help me thanks a lot.

You need to be asking an accountant instead of a bunch of truckers. This is like asking your barber for medical advise.

dont you think you should have known this before you started?

If you are not withholding taxes pay them on a 1099 form and make them independents and responsible for their own taxes. Or do the right thing and you withhold the taxes, which a trip to you local IRS office can give you book of what and how much to withhold.bullhaulerswife Thanks this. -

Asking how to pay after getting truck and driver. Putting the cart before the horse.
The IRS has really cracked down on 1099s and truck drivers. It is absloutely illegal to pay a driver that way if he is working full time for you. That does not mean I have not done it in the past, but that was many many years ago. I would be afarid to touch that with a 10 foot pole now.
A person can use an accounting program like quickbooks, and handle all the government paperwork themselves, which is a lot of hassel if you've never done it before. A person can also use a payroll service such as PayChex, or sililar, or use an accountant.Wickked, Brickman and losttrucker Thank this. -

[RANT]...... WTF? "Hi i just started my trucking company a couple months ago.".......
...... well ain't that sweet. Thousands of folks out there losing businesses and jobs and you just started "your" trucking company? This ain't Avon or Mary Kay.
You started "your" trucking company and you don't know jack ####e about business? Hello????? Guess what....... You have to take taxes (and a few other thingies too) out of their wages. Unles of course you want to break the law.
"I been writing them checks" Have you been writing the checks equally well? I can clearly see that you are absolutely qualified to run a business.
"Or what kind of form should i use so they can report their income at the end of the year for taxes?" Are you really asking this question? Really? Seriously? Really? Really actually serious? So you're saying that you are qualified to run a business and you don't have a clue about what form to use for an independent contractor? Really?
ROTFLMAO.
Wow ........ So, ummm.... you pay your "drivers" by the mile? How do you base your pay rate? HHG miles, hub miles or - Davis, Miles?
[/RANT]
............. Jimvavega Thanks this.
