Would like to hear from anyone who got an overlenght ticket
given by the CHP around the 205 and South Macarthur area.

How are you meaning "over length"? Did you have your tandems set to far back? Or are you saying overall length, bumber to bumber?

I can't think of any roads in Tracy that have the 65' restriction, especially around McArthur/205. And being from Paradise, you know about the 65' restrictions in CA, so you need to be more specific as to what "length" you are implying.

Yup, myself and another driver at the same time for being over
65 ft in the city of Tracy...... When we asked CHP officer he stated
"its been that way forever." Taped both our truck at 72'6"
(citation had nothing to do with tadem distence...Funny tho all he was
citing were OUT OF STATE companys.....Too bad Tracy does not now or have they ever had an overlenght law on their books.
This was verified with call to the City Attorny's office... I have
court trial in June to fight this ticket.

Good luck on your fight, but I'm from Nor Cal, you most likely will be beating your head against a wall. The State has 65' restrictions everywhere, unless otherwise posted! It is a State thing, CHP takes advantage of the "non-advertise", "no posting" of the restrictions. The only thing you can use id the Blue and White "T", and "TS" signs to find actual truck routes. If you see a "truck route" sign, not the blue and white, but white w/black numbers/letters, that is for local truck routes. The 65' restriction still applies.

Certain counties/cities have agreements with CHP to enforce, or to not enforce the rule. Sacramento county you wil get nailed most every time..however in the city of Sacramento, CHP has been told to lay off, and stay out of their jusrisdiction. The Pepsi plant in South Sacramento has only one legal way into it. Any other group of streets used by trucks will get ticketed, the legal way keeps you in the city limits, so if you get a Pepsi load to Sac, best to follow the pepsi truck in!

Sad, but true. I got nailed on Sierra College coming off I-80, been taking that route for years hauling wood chips, however the chip trailer is only 42', so the overall length kept me in the 65' rule. Went back to OTR, and with my 72'4" overall, got the present, so to speak, never thought about questioning it until that one...455$ and 2 points

Yep- that pretty much nails it.

CHP loves to hang out on 101 north, where I run a lot, and pick on anybody with a 48' trailer. Great revenue source.

Who you haulin chips for? SP?

    Just a couple quick points:
    check section 35401.5- it lists the exemptions to the 65 ft rule;
of which my truck is one
Also there are NO signs anywhere in the city of Tracy stating
the 65 ft law BECAUSE (wait for it ) TRACY has no 65 ft law
on its books and by their own muni code If there are no sighs posted the law is UNENFORCABLE
Cal also has an exemption for STAA trucks

I drove for JD Transport out of W. Sac, used to service all the little mills from Anderson down to Martel, and along 99. ever realized there were so many little outfits till you start pulling for the chippers.

I think almost all the mills are gone by now, that was 10 years ago almost. Last night, 5/31/09--they closed the mill in Camino, just east of Placerville on US 50, put 65 people on the unemployment lines...and no really good reason for it either, the mill was producing fairly well, supplied its own regen plant, and fed four other mills with product. I guess the timber industry got fed up with fighting the tree huggers in our forest.

Sorry to burst your bubble..you're wrong, the city might not, but remember the city is within the county, and the county is within the State, CHP has jurisdiction on ALL ROADWAYS in the State borders. But you go ahead and try your day in court, at least you aren't that far away from the COUNTY courthouse, as that is where your ticket will be handled, not in city hall...sorry:biggrin_2552:

Yep, hate to say it but the state over rules the city. State says 65'. CHP works for the state. Guess what you get to pay. FYI They like to use this law at scales when drivers give them a hard time too.
