I am buying a truck in Louisiana, since it is an off lease purchase and pretty much done " in house" it will be tagged in Mississippi which is their home state.( they apply for the tags and I pay) I live in New Mexico, I am leaseing the truck to a friend of mine who lives and is based in Louisiana. I will be pulling his trailer. My questions are: Do I need my own DOT number as he has all that? If yes, do I apply for the number here in NM or Miss? Next, what ins do I need if he has everything? Believe it or not but I ahve been trucking for 25 years but this is all new to me. HELP!!!!!!!!

Followed your link but still doesen't answer what I am trying to ask. Seems to be telling me how to get my own auth. If I am leaseing to someone with their own auth. and am NOT getting my own auth., do I need to get my own dot number anyway? Not trying to be difficult, just want to get it right.

Before anyone can apply for Plates, they must pay the Federal Highway Use Tax for their truck . That is when you will get your DOT Number. You don't get plates until Motor Vehicles sees a copy of the Use Tax. IF, The truck will be in your name, you pay for the Use Tax to get it Tagged.
Normally you pay the Highway Use tax which ever state you tag the truck. Whoever is doing the paperwork on purchasing and tagging the truck , make sure they give you a copy of the Highway Use Tax. It probably will be included in on Your bill. Unless they send you over to the Federal Building to apply yourself.

You will need Liability insurance to cover your truck. That is the basic. You can also add , Physical Liability in case of damage to the truck, Bobtail insurance , and/ or nontrucking Liability. This isn't mandatory, but will cover you in all cases when driving.

When you lease on, you may want to find out who is going to do the filing for the Fuel Taxes on that truck too. Sometimes it's up to you or the company will do it for you.

I don't know where my brain is at today. Sorry I'm wrong Spankster. Yes you can use the DOT number with who you lease to. Many people don't even post it on their trucks anymore. They just place a decal of the name of the company that their leased to on their trucks.

Not all states require DOT numbers. Nothing to do with the Highway Use Tax. We did this many years ago and all at once... applying, registering truck , and obtaining an MC , ICC Authority Number.

Here is a link if they will allow it to post. ,, or I'll copy and paste it.

** Effective January 1 2003 All Intrastate operators of commercial motor vehicles with a gross vehicle weight rating (GVWR) or gross combination weight rating (GCWR) or gross vehicle weight (GVW) or gross combination weight of 10,001 pounds or more domiciled in the following states must now secure and display a USDOT number: Alabama, Colorado, Florida, Georgia, Iowa, Kansas, Kentucky, Michigan, Minnesota, New York, Ohio, Oregon, South Dakota, Tennessee, Utah, West Virginia & Wisconsin.
*****CONNECTICUT AND MARYLAND: A DOT Number is required for INTRASTATE NON HAZ MAT carriers. A number must be applied for offline and will take 4 to 6 weeks for the state to process
