Trailer Length Restrictions on non-STAA routes

Newbie here, trying to learn as much as possible.

I have been trying to make sense of the length restrictions as shown in the front of the Motor Carriers Road Atlas. I have been researching various state DOT websites and forums such as this one.

I guess my question is ... how the hell does anything ever get delivered, especially in states like CA, IA, or MD? The fed regs say that states must allow you access off the STAA routes to "terminals", i.e. deliveries. But the moment you get off the STAA routes to deliver that load, you are on state or local roads and therefore at the mercy of the state or local regs. When those state (or local) regs restrict you from taking your sleeper+53' off the highway to get to your delivery point, how can you possibly do your job without getting ticketed?

Another related question: it is the driver's responsibility to know the regulations, but how can anyone expect a driver to know the restrictions for every town in every state? This seems insane. Will your company help you avoid tickets with good directions, or do they care?

Thanks all ... be nice to me.

Company directions can be iffy, it may be best to call the receiver. Their directions may be iffy, or perhaps you're not allowed (per your company) to call the receiver. Yes it is YOUR job to know the regulations. Welcome to trucking, let the fun begin......

i no that in md, as long as u have a delivery or a pick up IN THE AREA of where you, and you can prove it, ur fine, but if ur just cutting thru then u may have ur self a big problem.
i no this cause the nice leo of baltimore informed me of this information and she deiced to see where i was going, I was ONE block outside the AREA but gave me a break cause she always shops at the furniture store i was going too , however, i cut right throu downtown balitmore md, cut straight thru the middle, did it by accident tho, i was going to a place i went often, and forgot that i was all the way on the other side, so i just took my chances , needles to say i made to my delivery unbothered by any cop. every since intersection i passed thru had a no truck sign...eek!! lucky i guess, never did it again.
but anyway, i would imagine that if ur on a no truck rt but have buisness along that route they may not bother you..
