Run with overweight load??? - Truckers' Trucking Forum | Message Board

Load is overgross 580 lbs; shipper refuses to rework load. Dispatch says run with it, they will pay fines over qualcomm. However all fines will be in my name and I don't have $ to cover if they fail to pay them. Should I run or refuse?

I guess the question here is. How much fuel do you have? How far are you running this load?

Load pickups in Payette ID delivers in ronaoke tx 1500+ miles 13 scales on route, we are full on fuel. My husband filled before he scaled because he's not very smart.

You must have a load of frozen taters. Some folks might disagree with me. I would shift most of that weight on your steers. I think you can be over, up to 500lbs. This should help til you burn off some fuel. Hopefully you can dodge scales til your lighter. You need to burn roughly 63 gallons of fuel.

That works out to less than 1 percent, I doubt you would get pulled in for that much unless you are running for a DOT magnet. Four hundred miles down the road, and you should be OK, as long as the axles are OK. You can put more on the steering axle to avoid an overweight fine on the drives or the trailer, but only if your 5th wheel does actually slide. Just be sure your tires are rated to carry that much weight per tire on the steering axle. Different states have different tolerances, and even if you are legal, you may get cited by a state with a malfunctioning scale. My favorite story was one where a trailer was empty, and the driver was told he was over on gross and all axles, the driver opened his trailer to show the officer and the scale was promptly closed. Something was goofed up on that scale, probably by someone putting a little too much torque to his axles when departing.

I agree. Run it. Dodge the first scale or 2 if necessary and smack your partner. That was a rookie move (fueling before scaling a heavy load). I have been there a few times myself and it will look good for you in dispatches eyes if you pull this off without giving them grief for 1, and 2, not getting ticketed in the process. Team players at companies are rewarded, while whiners and complainers are weeded out, your choice though.
Figure on burning off about 8 lbs for each 6 to 7 miles you drive but remember no 2 scales are calibrated to read the same weight (they might get close but I have seen as much as a 300 lb difference in gross weight at the SAME scale when reweighing) meaning the truckstop scale may show lighter OR heavier than a dot scale.

I wouldent be scared. i 've next to never heard of anyone getting busted on less than 1,000 lbs. small potatoes my friend. Have a safe trip

side note: The truck i drove all this week weighed 94,000 lbs- and that was BOL weight PLUS truck and trailer (roughly 50,000 full of fuel no cargo).... cost me 38.50 in bridge tolls to cross the mighty mac

Good advise thus far as per winging it across the chicken house , assuming ya can get'er down to just say "a couple hundred" over.

I'll not speak for any scale house masters, but I will say that I've stood, in person, at the scale desks and watched the digital readout weights and saw the sclale master give the green light to trucks "a few hundred over" (axle)

A few hundred over is like doing 67 mph in a 65 zone.

You said he fueled up, then scaled it out. I hope that all did not take place at the same truckstop, LOL

Cat scale THEN take on fuel depending on what the ticket says. Do the favor and things should reciprocate in your favor later on.

Lastley, 10-4 on the dispatch knowing who will run vs who will whine.

Got prepassed on all open scales but 2 and one rolled us over when we were at 1/2 tank so we were good. Other was the WY Port of Entry that one confused me cause no signal on prepass, then they said go on bypass lane, we werent on scale, then they gave us the pull in signal... turns out they wanted to check ifta docs... scared the hell outta me.

Knoxville TN scales westbond, let me roll across 2K on the trailer tandems (couldn't slide it off). The guy must have been on a bathroom break or something. I'd been sweating bullets all evening. They were the only scale that red lighted me from PA.
