Is it allowable to deduct the standard mileage rate for use of my personal vehicle to go pick up and bring home my husband who had an emergency during hours of service on the road? I had to drive about 500 miles to bring hubs back home after he was admitted to the ER. There was no wreck, damage to any company property, etc, just a medical condition for which he was treated and asked to remain off duty until further testing cleared him. The company could not provide a means to transport him home. I know this is very specific, but if anyone has any thoughts, that would be awesome. On the one hand I have argued with myself that it is a personal illness and therefore personal expense, but I have also argued that where he was at the time was considered a temporary job location, he was on duty and the expense would not have occurred if he hadn't been performing job duties. Thanks to all, this community is great!

I would claim it on Schedule A under medical and dental expenses worksheet. There's a spot on the bottom right (Transportation to and from medical services) where you claim it. I think it's still .20 a mile. I would claim both ways and any other mileage you occurred.

Thanks! I was thinking it would be under Job expenses, but medical expenses makes sense as well.
