Travel or per diem? Not sure what this really is.

Check lists "deducted from gross, Travel expenses" each week. It's either $200 or $250 depending on how far he drives which is typically within a 900 mile radius. He never uses it and it is added back in each week. Is this the per diem? He takes what he needs from home and buys what he wants while out using his own cash. Not sure how or if we deduct this. Many thanks for any help!

If he is an interstate truck driver, he can deduct 80% of $59 per full day he spends away from home. He can deduct 75% of 80% of $59 for each day he leaves or returns home.

The IRS does not call this per diem, it is the standard meal allowance and you can read more here: http://www.irs.gov/publications/p463/ch01.html

if that 250 he's is getting is paid as per diem it will count toward the 80 per cent of the 59 dollars per each day away from home.

if the per diem paid on the check is less than the 80 per cent of 59 times the number of days , the difference can be deducted.
