    Little busy with the stripes..

You could put a cell such as A1 "Daily Per Diem Allowed" and then B1 as the amount they could enter since Per Diem changes yearly.. right now you lock in the 59 in the cell f3

    >>>> whereas b1 can be a variable the user will enter in that cell.

PM me,, I am looking at your formula for F3 and not seeing where you are taking the .75 for days to/from domicile.

F4 you are taking the straight 59 instead of .80 and .75.

The white boxes can be edited by anyone (might not let you if you're on a mobile), but I haven't found a way to turn off those grey stripes while maintaining the cell protection they denote. The end user can manually click view & uncheck "protected cells." :(

    Good idea, changed

When google sheets calculates the days, it comes up 1 day short: 1/31/14 - 1/1/14 = 30 -- not 31. But like you mention, if you left on 1/1 and returned 1/31 that would be 30.5 days due to the two 75% days, so I actually add 0.5 instead of 1 (using a simple IF qualifier to ensure there was an entry for those cells):

    +0.5*IF(B8>B6,1,0)

I then add the 0.25 if you were away from home on either the beginning or end date (eg you were on the road during new years):

    +0.25*IF(B7="y",1,0) +0.25*IF(B9="y",1,0)

Yep -- there should be a note to the right explaining that F4 is the number you enter into Turbo Tax (because TurboTax multiplies by 80%). F5 is 80% of F4 -- which is what you put into your schedule A or C if you're not using TurboTax...

I worked mine a little differently. I listed mine by state and at the end of the day I just added 1 to that state I was in. I had mine broken down by flat rate and state rate. My example shows flat rate only. Each state may be higher or less than the flat rate. Usually you might come out ahead with state rates depending on the states. This chart is put out by the GSA.

basically. I copied the Excel into a PDF to show here...

What I am thinking about, if someone used the spreadsheet and then had to explain how they came up with the numbers they might not know how it was derived. Breaking it down by the difference in days out versus Home to/from gives more details.

What I'd really like is for it to only have 1 data entry box until data is entered, at which point it would automatically create another entry box.

I was under the impression that the state rates were not allowed, this came from the irs a while back, flat rate for dot related work only.

They prefer the flat rate, easier to figure out... but states do have a set rate, some higher, some lower.
