    DoubleDear,

Thanks for the information. You provided some great food for thought. I hope you'll continue to post both your and your husband's experiences. What a great resource for those of us who plan to follow a similar path.

I second Andrew. My husband has just started, but would like to own his own truck someday. If you keep posting, I will surely follow.

In a round about way, thats how I got my first truck. I saw an ad for end dump drivers wanted. I called him and explained I did OTR for (at this time 6 years). He told me he needed people with thier own trucks but I must have talked the right stuff. He said he would buy a truck up to 20,000 and I would just pay him back. $700 a month for my new 94 KW T800 complete with wet kit. I did 50%OTR and 50% city work. I could have paid it off sooner but took my time and paid it off in 2 years and three months.
Like an idiot, I sold it to another driver because I was going to try the college thing.
I just signed papers on my second new truck officially today with a dealer.

Even though I'm a few months late, Congratulation WADE. !!

    That's the Way to GO !!! :biggrin_25525: :biggrin_25525:

If you can make Smaller Payments on a truck Without Financing it and go for Two Years without any Breakdowns or Repairs,, except for the minor maintenance., oil change and so on,,

You're ONE Step Ahead of the Game!

This will give you the heads , financially , to be able to do more things with your Authority and to Expand Out......
    Can't emphasize this any stronger.
    Like,,,
We were then able to get more equipment, different types of Trailers, (vans, flat, drop deck) and with that, more of a variety of customers., and even started buying our own loads of produce ( trailer loads right off the farm) to sell out to the Food Chain Stores.

Thanks everyone for your wonderful comments!

WHY DIDN'T I THINK OF THAT!!! I've been a driver for 6yrs and I've done a bit of OTR, Reigonal, and Local str8 jobs. I've been around my share of good trucks AND DEFINITELY BAD TRUCKS!!!! I went to used truck dealers and they're all saying I can get one, I just need to find work BEFORE I get it.

I'm somewhat mechanically inclined and I have some tools, But I just don't know all that much about trucks. I CAN learn. I also want to get my own authority. But I'm being encouraged not to by dealers. But should I? If I can get good loads and a good broker - like PharmPhail - I'm sure I can do it. I'm also thinking about learning HOW to be a broker myself...

First off a grand down is nothing, it should be at least 5 or close to ten.

Second there is no way to guarentee your payment will be made unless you have the experience behind you so it would be a hard sell for an owner to part with their truck unless it is cheap or junk.

third a contract should have at least one legal professional look at it to make sure it benefits both parties.

If you have bad credit, then fix that, it takes time - I know, I've done it a couple times. Then get yourself a plan and stick to it.
